Phone call from school, they've agreed his place for PE, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology. Phew.

ThatWordDoesNotMeanWhatYouThinkItMeans · 21/08/2025 12:56

Relief all round here - DS finally got a 4 in Maths on his third attempt, so can move on to Level 2 at college. They didn't give a score so no idea where he fell in the grade boundary, but it doesn't matter. Anyway, I won't need to argue with them now about their published entry requirements vs his L1 tutor.

He phoned and explained we'll be on holiday for enrolment day next week, so they've said he can come in and enrol tomorrow.

We haven't mentioned we'll be away for the start of term yet though - total oops on my part. 😬

My son was written off for most of his school life. He has an EHCP for dyslexia, ADHD and visual stress. I was told he would never access GCSEs and shouldn’t be in mainstream.

Well, he’s bloomin’ smashed his GCSEs! 1x6, 2x5s, 2x4s 1x3 and a merit in construction.

I am sooo bloody proud of him. He’s off to college to pursue his dream of being a carpenter. 😍

Slightly off topic, but you mention visual stress and dyslexia: have you looked up online Irlen Syndrome; easily remedied with special glasses

ChannelLightVessel · 21/08/2025 12:59

Congratulations to everyone.
So proud of DD: 6 x 9s and 4 x 8s. She is autistic, and has OCD: her rituals take up several hours a day.
18 macarons have arrived by post from lovely XMIL.

achangeofnameisasgoodasarest · 21/08/2025 12:59

Some amazing stories of trials overcome and individual successes here- so well done to all!

on the remarks, we’ve just been through this with dd1- teachers can see the papers and advise whether to send them off. Sometimes it is best to send one at a time as marks can go up as well as down. I think if the grade changes you get your money back.

if the teachers see them first they can at least give an idea of whether it is worth it- and if your child has had a tutor they might do a review for you too. Not all teachers will do this of course but many are so dedicated- I was so grafeful
to those who did for dd1.

dd2 scrutinising her drama- 2marks off next band- and possibly her science. But because they can go down as well as up it can be a gamble: and it costs of course.

But for now, well done to all. I’ll sleep much better tonight. Hope you all do too.

Forgot to say, well done to your son; he’ll have a wonderful future as a carpenter

Great news-what a relief-am very pleased for him

Pinkflower100 · 21/08/2025 13:00

Gosh. Was going to check the history boundaries but there are so many papers to choose from I have no idea.

swampwitch0 · 21/08/2025 13:00

Dd is off for drama by 1 mark so I've sent and email and asked advice.
Dd not too bothered but..
1 mark...

My son's Eng Lit score was bizarrely low - predicted a 9 and got a 6. I find that really odd as English is my subject, and I am confident he'd revised well and knew his stuff. Obviously marking for Eng Lit is subjective and I think I'm going to push for a remark. Anyone else experienced this?

Same here. DS is 1 mark off the boundary so have paid for a remark!

Yes, he was diagnosed by an Irlen specialist a few years ago and uses overlays. Too vain for glasses!

I would imagine though that if you are a couple of marks off the next grade up, it's almost impossible to 'lose' enough marks to fall down a grade?

Wirdle · 21/08/2025 13:07

My kids years off but I love this thread, all of your supportive parents should be so proud. The high fliers are amazing but those who've overcome tough times are so inspirational.

I'm just moving a huge chunk of cash from savings to pay a talented carpenter for some work, so hearing about @Rubiscoisfantastic son is so lovely.

Hope you all enjoy celebrating today

Be careful with this! In the subject I teach , there are 7 marks between a grade 9 and a 7, for example.

Have you paid and got that done already? I've been into my son's school and they were a bit more evasive, said it would be a 'review' rather than the whole paper being remarked (which obviously gives the exam board more wiggle room to stand by their marking). Does this mean I can push for an actual proper remark?

Gosh! I had no idea it could be that tight. Ignore me then!

Yep my son was going to do Eng Lit for A-level and now understandably doesn't want to.

We've just requested the scripts for the teacher to look over.

As far as I can tell AQA English marking is a random number generator. I would urge keen English students not to let it put them off A level. My daughter got a surprise 6 (never below an 8 before) and is now doing IB and getting constant 7s(full marks). Her brother dyslexic hates English with a passion also just came out with a 6 which we are delighted with but it just doesn’t make any sense.

Strikeback · 21/08/2025 13:28

Interesting to read other people's reports of AQA English. DD got 2 x 5 after being predicted higher so has had to switch from doing the A Level....she was very disappointed but she's getting over it and pleased with her new choices.

Obviously wouldn’t boast in real life so may I shout out my girl’s results here?

My fabulous AuDHD, socially isolated daughter, who has had such a hard time with bereavement and bullying just got: four 7s, four 8s (one with a merit), and a 9.

I’m so proud of her ❤️

Fabulous!

Mixed bag. He got excellent results in what he needed excellent results in.. but a predicted 8/9 in English Language has come out a 6 (distinction in speaking) which has disappointed him.

We’ve had the same! Predicted 8/9 in Lit/Lang and both a 6!

Mycatismad · 21/08/2025 13:40

Saeurcat · 21/08/2025 12:44

Do schools always contact pupils/families if they think a remark is worth it?
how many points off the boundary would you consider for a remark?
(asking as Dd has a few that are within 10 marks off)

Daughter is within 1/2 marks of the boundaries on three subjects and there automatically sending hers for remarking

DataColour · 21/08/2025 13:43

Lovely to hear such good results for so many DCs. Many celebrations today!

Regarding AQA English, we were keeping our fingers crossed as DS was borderline, and as predicted he got a 5 in English Lit (actually he got a 4 in mocks so he has done better), but he went and got a 7 in English Language! I don't know how he pulled it off as he didn't think he did that well, so we were all worried.

Another friend has said the same - and her child is at a very good private school. Is very strange
