If you have a child who is due to start year 7 this September then you need to submit a late application right now, not an in-year application. You won't be able to submit an in-year application for a year 7 student until the start of September (I'm assuming that's why the one you tried to submit was simply rejected).

Have you identified a school or schools with open places in those two years that you're trying to apply for?

TeenToTwenties · 07/08/2025 19:11

You may need to be willing to split schools if there aren't spaces for both at the same place, or move one, and if there are sibling criteria the other will move up the priority list and thus stand more of a chance of getting in.

Bluevelvetsofa · 07/08/2025 19:21

It will be a question of whether any schools have places or not, which will become clearer at the start of term.

LIZS · 07/08/2025 19:22

Surely the y7 hasn’t started there yet?

Hoppinggreen · 07/08/2025 19:23

You will have to wait until september and see if the schools you want have a space, nothing you can do now

Hoppinggreen · 08/08/2025 09:15

No need to PM me OP, we can communicate here
I would say that if you refuse a school place then the LEA is under no obligation to offer you another one though.

Same here. Hmm Why are your dc so resistant if they have yet to attend the offered School? Chances are year 7 places are fully allocated unless there are no shows. Have you asked to go on waiting lists?

In terms of the in year application into year 8, presumably the reason is they have no space? For the year 7 child, they should go on the waiting list for the school you want to choose.

It's very difficult for people to read posts without punctuation. Is this the correct interpretation?

"I have done a late application for my daughter going into Year 7. I am also waiting for the outcome from the LA for a new school for my older daughter, who is going into Year 8 at the school I am trying to move her away from. That was a mid-year application on 15.7.25. It was refused with no reason given. They have to give a reason within 14 days, then I have to inform the LA"

If that's right then I'm confused about the last bit in bold. Did you apply directly to the school or via the LA?

It is likely that the school you wanted for your elder daughter is full in year 8. Admissions authorities need to give you a rejection reason in writing within 15 school days. This is mandated by clause 2.30 of the national Schools Admissions code. As it is currently the summer holidays, you may not get the letter until September.

mooting · 08/08/2025 17:35

@Tuzzdaddy You do need to manage your daughters' expectations. They may not be able to get a place at the school they want to go to, in which case they will need to continue at the current school unless you home school them or manage to get places elsewhere.

Littledogball · 08/08/2025 20:25

I would imagine if they want to move schools they’ll have the same problem in their next school. That’s what usually happens….

Lightuptheroom · 16/08/2025 19:29

Does the school do its own admissions? Unless the letter says something about section 3.10 of the admissions code then the most likely refusal is the school is full.
As they already have school places, they will be expected to attend/return there.
As a previous poster has said the amount of time is school days so you won't heat anything from the local authority until the schools go back in September. Most admissions teams are on leave themselves at the moment.
