What trainers for Y7?

Hi,

My son is starting secondary school this year and is my first and only child to go through.

He will need trainers for PE and I am stuck (despite being a secondary teacher - I don't teach PE and honestly don't really notice kids shoes).

Son isn't really bothered about fashion 🙈 but I obviously want him to fit in!

So, does anyone know what trainers kids are wearing (preferably that don't cost the earth - he is tall so in men's sizes and grows like a weed!).

Thank you!

In our one who is very strict on uniform, PE trainers were free for all but surprisingly not being particularly important at all. My boys just had cheapish Nike ones (as in £25-30 bracket), don't spend too much money as they will need replacing a few times during secondary

For PE we've just bought whatever fits at sports direct, usually some sort of cheap nikes or addidas. For outside of school it's a different story!

If you can stretch to JD then the carrier bags are very much acceptable as a PE bag....no one wants an actual PE bag in secondary school Mum....apparently 🤣

You could take him to your local shoe shop / sports shop and ask the assistant which types of trainers their customers typically buy for school trainers?

Yeh second the idea of cheaper Nike ones.

Have a look on eBay for rarely worn ones if he is not sporty and thus will only be wearing them for PE twice a week. Or yy look online for sale ones in last year's colours (is any colour fine?). If you not sure about colour, black is always good.

I’ve always gone with Adidas Galaxy 7 running shoes as PE trainers and both DC have been happy. I find them a reasonable balance between cost and branding. Adidas have had them on sale at some point during the summer holidays every year for the last three.

Around here they like On Cloud and Hoka Clifton

We needed to get trainers that were white underneath for indoor sports (not to leave marks).

Nike is the safe bet for PE and it can be a cheap pair but you’ll the out of school pair will probably be much more.

Thank you so much for all of the suggestions - I'll look at those styles.
Glad cheaper nikes etc are fine - no way am I spending a fortune on trainers for school.

Thankfully, the PE bag is solved as they have to have the school one 😂

Don't go for anything particularly expensive! It's PE. My son will be going into Year 10, but every year, you can guarantee a lot of the Year 7's lose bits of the PE kit or in some cases the entire kit!! Name absolutely everything, including the PE bag! I have always bought white or black trainers (depends if your son's school have specific rules on colour etc). I don't spend any more than £20-£25 either.
