6th Form colleges

DD will go to year 11 in September. She goes to an all girls private school and had a friendship fallout from the group 2 years back. She has been trying to make new friends but most girls have had their group for years and she feels she is imposing. so she is alone most of the time, though she says she is happy being alone and saves all the drama. But it breaks my heart, friends at school play such an important part in one’s life in these years.
she is excited at the prospect of changing in 6th form and getting a new start.
Any feedback on Esher, Farnborough or Godalming colleges? She wants to study medicine, do these colleges have a good support for applications to med schools? A great scenario would be an academic environment (she is academic) with some healthy friendships and I would want to be able to give her that opportunity.

Don't have personal experience but know lots of DCs who’ve left private schools to go to Esher College and done medicine, Oxbridge etc.
would also say that a lot of friendship dramas at DCs school evaporated in sixth form. Possibly because lots of the ones involved left! Was an altogether more peaceful experience!

Also- I know Esher admissions closes really early.

I don’t actually have any kids at these colleges but I know that Farnborough and Godalming are very well thought of. No idea about esher cos it was too far away for us to look at. They’re great colleges, excellent results. Godalming is large and farnborough is massive. They will both have open days this autumn- suggest you both go and look around. There was a godalming open day last week unfortunately.

My granddaughter went to Farnborough and is now at university. She enjoyed her time there and got good grades and six offers.

My friend’s son is off to Cambridge in the autumn (so long as A level results day goes as planned!) from Esher. I’ve heard good things about it. Unless they’ve changed, the entrance is by lottery (unless you’re in a feeder school locally). Godalming also had a good rep and good onward progression when I was looking at colleges for my kids a few years ago. It had fun stuff like lunchtime band practice as well (for some reason that stood out for me…)

Sorry to hear she’s had a rubbish time of it. Post-16 education is just so much less socially dramatic than secondary school. They grow up a lot in those two years.
