Spanish A level class online?

Does anyone know if this is possible? DS's school are not offering A level MFL. He's gutted as he's extremely good at Spanish and loves it. He had online tuition for GCSE as the MFL at school was pretty dire - and he has excelled. Unfortunately the tuition doesn't offer A level.

DS's school have said they are happy to enter him for A level and even arrange mock exams - but they can't teach it. He will need to be taught as it's more than language - book, film etc. 1:1 tuition is very expensive but group tuition is much more manageable so wondering if there is such a thing as group A level tuition online. Does anyone know of anything? I assume school can enter him with whichever exam board he is studying so that's not an issue.

Thank you!

Have you looked at adult education classes locally? Could be an option if school if supportive.
Would it be a third or fourth A level? Try home education colleges such as NEC or Instituto Cervantes.

PrincessOfPreschool · 28/06/2025 20:09

Thank you. I will look into those. Don't think local college will do it plus would need to be out of school hours. It would be a 4th as school requires 3 on their premises.

You may well be able to find an A level tutor online. And as such they might offer group classes which would obviously be cheaper.

I tutor A level in my subject remotely. Not Spanish so I am not advertising! But there must be tutors who do. Group lessons are less common though. What kind of budget would be acceptable? IME an hour a week 1-1 would be enough to support a committed student through A level MFL.

Thanks Clary. 1:1 tuition is an option though I think group twice or 3x per week would be better. Do you know of anywhere where group tuition is offered online. I know loads of websites offer 1:1 tutoring.

Sorry I can’t offer advice but am looking for an online GCSE Spanish course to help my DD through. Can you recommend the one your DS did?

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/06/2025 20:47

Sure. I'll pm you. I only have phone numbers but will see if I can find it online. It's truly brilliant. I have an older son who did plenty of tuition in other subjects but nothing as good as this.

I have a student who is doing 3 a levels at school and one language privately. They have one hour tuition in person per week and then complete work independently. They are just finishing year 12 and it is working very well. They are an excellent student though. They also have some informal conversation practice through a local languages cafe.

clary · 30/06/2025 21:07

Yes @PrincessOfPreschool I would imagine three hours a week of group tuition would cost about the same as one hour 1-1 – and I think would give better results. Like I said, I have worked tutored an A-level MFL student for an hour a week and it was very successful. They were happy to do a reasonable amount of work outside the lessons of course. I don’t know of any group tuition sorry. I guess to an extent it depends on your budget. And I think prices for A level tuition can really vary.

Her name is Rosanna Lloyd and she's on Linked in and YouTube. I don't want to send phone numbers on here so I'll go on my laptop tomorrow and send her number.

Thanks all. I only wanted the group as DS is very sociable and I think he works a bit better with some competition and bouncing off others. I think he could do it on his own as he's quite driven but might not enjoy it as much. These are all really helpful ideas. The NEC stuff looked good and affordable so it's good to have a recommendation. I looked at it the other day and also found another group one which I need to look into.

Ugh I managed to mangle my post there – I meant to say that the 1-1 tuition would get better results IMHO than group tuition for the same price (ie 1 hour's 1-1/3 hours’ group).

I don’t know how well groupwork would go remotely tbh but of course it does exist. That Spanish class linked above is online learning not online tuition – in other words the student would need to be very motivated. I would dig into how much 1-1 time there is – I am thinking for £730 over two years not very much as that’s only about £30 pm and most MFL A level tutors I know or know of charge between £40 and £60 an hour.
