Hello, does anyone know if children living in Isleworth are eligible for Tiffin school and how difficult is the commute ?

Yes they would be. The priority area is simply 10k from the school, so catchment stretches quite far. As to how easy to get to, I’m not sure. Is there a direct bus from near you into Kingston?

OneRoseBee · 06/04/2025 17:12

Public transport needs changing bus/train and I don’t feel comfortable yet letting g him travel alone. I am trying to understand if there are any private coaches from my area.

Tiffin don’t provide any coaches - they’re a state school in the middle of a large town with lots of public transport options so they expect all students to make their own way to school. The vast majority of kids in London would be walking / using public transport by themselves.

Only the private schools offer coach services.

Pretty much all children at Tiffin will be travelling independently on public transport, unless they live within walking distance.

Thousands of 11 year olds travel independently in London. You would have the summer holidays to practice.

I appreciate this feels weird right now but it will change very fast.

DD does a bus and a tube every day and it took literally one day of me taking her and collecting her before she said she'd be fine to do it alone (she was).

I expect there’s a bus from Isleworth into Richmond and then another bus from Richmond to Tiffin. Otherwise, isn’t Isleworth on the same line that goes into Richmond? At school times the train would be faster than sitting in traffic on a bus.

Tiffin Boys is a 5 minute walk away from Kingston train / bus station. There are no direct trains from Isleworth to Kingston; a change of train is required and the journey would be around 35 - 40 minutes with that change. The alternative is getting a bus from Isleworth down the road to Hounslow and then changing onto a 111 bus, which then goes straight down to Kingston. However, doable as this is, it's not an especially quick bus journey - you'd be looking at about an hour, with the change of bus at Hounslow included. Or, as you suggest, getting a H37 bus from Isleworth down to Richmond (about 25 minutes or so, depending on traffic), and then an onward bus to Kingston (probably about another 20 - 25 minutes).

I did it - many moons ago

h37 to Richmond and 65 to Kingston
or 281 or 111 from Hounslow

my parents took me in the mornings for the first weeks in year 7 but otherwise I was fine

There are private hire companies that run coaches to state grammars from certain areas. Not sure about Tiffin - because it has a catchment area, presumably everyone lives within a reasonable commute on public transport so less likely to be offered.

OneRoseBee · 08/04/2025 04:31

Yes, this was the information I was looking for. I know there are private hire companies that run coaches and wanted to know if anyone is using that from Isleworth, pick up points, timings etc
