Bootham Assessment Day

DC is going to the assessment day on Monday and I'm now starting to panic that we've not done enough prep!!

Everyone we spoke to there said oh don't worry about it it's nothing too difficult but I've just looked at some random private school info page and their sample papers are probably a bit harder than I was thinking! The info just says an informal maths and English assessment....doesn't mention 11+ style or anything but I don't know what to expect. Probably a bit late to be worrying about it now of course.
Anyone been through it that can offer any words of wisdom??

Bootham in York?

JaffavsCookie · 09/01/2025 20:09

Bootham ( am assuming York) is a non selective school, they will accept your dc regardless of how they do. The assessment day is partly for show and also gives them an idea of where your dc currently is.

I am pretty sure that school isn't actually selective

Thanks all. Yes - I was under that impression too. I'd randomly looked at the page I mentioned and half read it before realising that the papers were the same for every school and was just an example. Last minute panic. I think as we are very much of the opinion that if we need to prep too much for anywhere then it's probably not the right place so good that it's not actually selective!

The assessment day was lovely when we went but different head now so not sure if anything has changed. Really tied in with their ethos as it felt very about the child and who they were. The chat with the head was such a lovely conversation which was clearly designed to get an understanding of who my son was and his passions in life. Friends who have children there have really good things to say that are again in line with the family and valuing the child as a person ethos.

Hope you got on OK, OP. Our DS is in year 7 there now and it's such a great school. He has dyslexia, which at the assessment day stage wasn't diagnosed, but they did pick up that he needed some extra help with English.

Hi @ethelredonagoodday thank you! Yes we were offered a place - we're all very excited as it does seem like a lovely place 😍
