Need help with feedback - Glyn OR Harris ?

Hey Everyone,

Looking for some help with personal experiences/feedback about Secondary schools around Sutton - Glyn Boys OR Harris ?

Quick background - we are new to UK and the schooling system here. Moved this year and tried 11+ with 6 months prep and missed it by a few marks. I have a son who's bright and confident. Not a top ranker but I feel with right school environment that helps him reach his potential would be best for him.

My friends here always suggest to try for Glyn boys compared to Harris since it was a grammar school before but recent years GCSE/A levels results haven't been that great compared to other schools in the area.

Can you share any feedback or experiences you have about both the schools ? Academics/pastoral care/bullying incidents ?

Thanks so much :)

What year group are you looking for?

Nevi009 · 11/12/2024 16:48

Sorry for not being clear, this is for admissions to year 7.

Did you apply in October and you are waiting to hear on 3rd March 2025? If so then wait to hear, Glyn is popular and will be full on offer day so if you don't get the offer you would have to join a waiting list.

are you in year 7 at the moment - Glyn has a v small catchment that would not be anything in Sutton (not even the Sutton/Stoneleigh area)

Im sure my friend got in from Sutton last yr.

Acadrmicslly Harris is probably better, colleagues dc go there. She has mixed feelings but has been happy with their results

Radishknot · 11/12/2024 17:32

Just looked it up, furthest distance offer was 2.7 km

Nevi009 · 11/12/2024 17:39

Thanks for all your responses.:) My child is in Year 6 currently

Bit of context to add, we are in a funny situation atm. I filled in CAF form from Sutton with my preference list. Harris and Glyn are both part of it but we were notified to vacate our rented flat just a few days after submitting CAF.

I checked with Surrey and Sutton council both and they advised to inform them about our new address when we have it sometime in Jan '25 and they will update our records.

Hence, trying to be extra cautious now where to move (we'll need to update our address in any case and inform LA). At our current residence, we're at equidistant from Harris and Glyn both, a bit outside catchment.

Have you looked round Glyn having looked around for both year 7 entry and sixth form and for me it suits some children but not others (not mine as it happens)

where are you in relation to Glenthorne and Cheam High as well what is the more in catchment of where you are moving too

Nevi009 · 11/12/2024 22:18

We are closer to Cheam high but have to vacate this house in 1 months time. Any potential new properties aren't available currently in the same area.

@Nevi009 , I would focus on finding a rental that is as close as possible to 1 of the schools so you get a place in March.

Tiswa · 11/12/2024 22:28

What did you put down in the application on the old address and where are you looking to move to

Nevi009 · 11/12/2024 22:34

1 - Harris
2 - Glyn
3 - Glenthorne

is what I've submitted in CAF. Hence, was looking for some feedback about both the schools as I've mostly heard mixed reviews.

schools do have mixed reviews - around here we are lucky in that you do tend to have choice but schools aren’t always one size fits all. My two are at different schools because that is what suits them. DD will move on to a different sixth form

Glyn for example suits and is amazing for some boys not so much others it is very much the feel and the suitability for your child

Nevi009 · 12/12/2024 08:23

Yes I agree :) thanks everyone for your help. Fingers crossed now to find someplace to move asap.
