School uniform change policy?

Hi so my daughter is in year 9, she has always gone to school in full complete uniform and a branded blazer and p.e shorts and tshirt. No problems. They have a new head teacher who all of a sudden has decided my daughters trousers aren't trousers because they don't have
*a zip
*buttons

  • & pockets...

Now I think this is incredibly pedantic lol
The trousers for context are Women's size 10 because my daughter is tall and abit chunky due to her hormone suppressant injections she's had since she was 7 until she was 11 theh made her gain weight so because of that we've struggled to get normal school trousers so we got Elasticated waist women's work trousers they are plain black. Not short or cropped or flaired, no patterns or lines or design on them. Just plain simple black trousers. These trousers haven't been an issue the whole time she's been there & this new head is telling me that aren't trousers. So I'm like well they aren't shorts are they so if they aren't trousers what are they? She said Jeggings. I'm like jeggins are Jeans style Leggings so that's incorrect. Out of principal im not changing the trousers because they are perfectly fine and in a cost of living crisis I think they should focus on more important things like the bullying at the school and vaping lol am I being dramatic or am I justified in what I'm saying. She keeps saying they aren't trousers because there's no buttons or zip or pockets but i literally got them from the women's work wear section lol so what are they if they aren't trousers ? They aren't Leggings material either.

Are they tight fitting?

noblegiraffe · 06/11/2024 23:28

Sounds like they are having a Clampdown On Leggings. Leggings are generally decided by their lack of zip/pockets.

I think you can now buy leggings that have an entirely decorative zip on them.

Ariela · 06/11/2024 23:28

I absolutely would sew a zip, buttons and patch pocket on.

Are they tight fitting?

Not really? They are the stretchy work trousers material if makes sense. The label says TROUSERS anyway so I'm not sure what the exact issue is lol just seems a really pedantic thing for them to cry about

I get that but the label even says trousers. Lol they aren't like leggings material , i mean it's 12 and this teacher is still emailing me which i find bizarre and unprofessional on their part 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ he's like that's your opinion on them being trousers. I'm like No Google says trousers are 2 long pieces of fabric which covers the legs it doesn't Stipulate to be trousers they need a pocket and zip etc and it's not an opinion it's a fact. The whole thing is just maddening

God have they nothing better to do?

You’ve struggled to get normal school trousers in a size 10? Is that down to thigh size? Asking because we are struggling with boys school trousers. Most trousers are slim fitting and my son is larger of thigh than the current trend. Straight leg are still too narrow, plus size too big. He’s fine with sports joggers etc. Very annoying and can sympathise.

What does the school uniform policy say? That's more relevant than google because you'll have probably signed a home school agreement to abide by it.

CocoDC · 07/11/2024 00:16

An 11 yo who is a size 10 will probably look like she’s wearing leggings unless the trousers are at least as wide from knee to ankle as her thighs. Go for straight / boot leg / wide leg styles if she has big thighs.

I did say that they should be more concerned wirh the bullying as a child sadly took their life 3 years ago because of it at the school .but apparently that's off topic lol

The head teacher is messaging you at midnight do you mean? Absolutely not. I wouldn't accept that at all. I'd turn off notifications for the night, then take it to your local authority in the morning (or whoever is responsible for the school in your area) It's wholly unprofessional and sounds like the teacher is being child like in their responses too, telling you "that's your opinion" is ridiculous. I agree sew on a button and be done with it. I will say you're handling it with more patience than I might manage.

flowersintheattix · 07/11/2024 00:23

PS I'd find the trousers on the Next website complete with description and include a copy of that in any further correspondence on the matter.

No my daughter is 12 years old but she's 5"4 and size 12 women's waist. We got her size 16 / 17 girls trousers and they either don't fit in the leg or don't fit the waist , so women's work trousers fit perfectly. Her trousers are straight leg x

Have you tried boy's trousers? My ds had some that looked just like normal school trousers but had elastic inserts that adjusted the waist by a button in each side. My ds was very chunky & wore them right to Y11.

Have you pointed out that the actual school trousers don't come in a size that fits her ? I'd be asking what he suggests you do about that ?

CuriousGeorge80 · 07/11/2024 00:55

What a dickhead.

If he replies again I would just reply and say something along the lines of “The school uniform policy allows students to wear trousers. My daughter is clearly wearing trousers. As I have explained, due to medication my daughter had to take when she was younger, she is unable to wear other trousers. I do not consider that there is anything further to discuss on the topic and will not be responding to further emails from you on the matter. If you continue to harass me or my daughter on the matter, or if any action is taken against her in connection with her wearing these trousers, I will raise the matter with the School Governers.” (Or whatever the complaints process is at your school).

How the fuck schools think this is a good use of their time is beyond me.
