I am looking for some help.

we have always live in the same area in South Yorkshire but looking for a change….. still within South Yorkshire…. Anyone recommend nice villages with good secondary schools close by…. My son is moving up after this year and we are looking for somewhere nice to live with a good school.

TIA 😘😘

Which bit are you in now?
What's your budget?
What do you need?
I'd look at the best secondary schools in south Yorkshire and see where you can afford a house and which areas you like.
In Barnsley Penistone Grammar School (also has a good 6th form) is probably the best. Some lovely villages around however some have better transport links than others so I'd look at that for dc as well.

Remember that if you want a good (= popular, often) school it's by miles best if you can apply by the deadline, otherwise you will be a late applicant and towards the back of the queue, even if you live next door.

The deadline as I imagine you know is 31 October (I assume you mean DS has just started back in year 6? If he's in year 5 ignore me!). So you don't have long at all.

If you apply late, and live very close, you'll be at the top of the waiting list, but behind all those who applied on time and were allocated places.

Our budget is 200 thousand, we currently live in the dearne valley area Wath, Swinton. My son is leaving year 6 next summer so currently in year 5. That’s just really worried me that I have to look for a place by October.

Do you mean he is currently in year 6 (ie just started back in year 6?) this post is a bit confusing.

If he’s just in year 5 then you have time, but if he leaves primary in July 2025 then yes, your application for secondary is due the end of oct 2024 ie in about eight weeks.

Yes he is in y5 n leaves in July 2025.

So he is in year 6? Year 5 was last year? If he is in year 5 he leaves primary in July 2026.

Not trying to score points - it’s a key question.

I don’t know who to use this I’m new to it all and I can’t edit my comments 😡

my son is 11 in September so he’s moving onto secondary school in July 2025 so this academic year he’s in year 6. I’m confusing myself now! Iv just checked on Google about when to apply.

thank you for also pointing it out to me because I did not know.

Ok so yes, if you move, ideally you need to be in your new home by October. Check with the LA as I believe some will accept applications later if contracts are exchanged by the deadline, or make other accommodations. But overall, sounds as tho you might be best to look for the best school near you now.

there isn’t much choice to be honest I have 2 teenage daughters already attending secondary school, we are just looking for somewhere decent to live away from this area.
