DD has made a "studytok" account to give her motivation for studying apparently lol. Seems to be spending more time making videos than actually revising but hopefully it helps!

NotDonna · 01/09/2024 07:55

Studytok? I’m intrigued.
And yes I can imagine that being a distraction but I’m still intrigued esp if it actually does help.

HereComesYourMam · 01/09/2024 08:34

Oblomov24 · 31/08/2024 12:30

We are off to Ally Pally for 'Inspector Calls'. This thankfully is our final theatre visit.

We were there too!

Oblomov24 · 01/09/2024 09:05

Ahh Mam 👋

What did you think? I thought it was ok. A bit overdramatic with props and stunts, but ok. I think it could've been condensed, made shorter.

WhenDoISleep · 01/09/2024 12:04

Snap, Oblomov24 and HereComesYourMam. We were at the matinee yesterday as well.

I’m hoping it was helpful to DS. I need to book tickets for stagings of his other two set texts, those shows will not be until next year though.

WriterOfWrongs · 01/09/2024 12:21

Oh that’s a good idea about going to see An Inspector Calls - although I better check DS is studying it first 😂

DataColour · 01/09/2024 13:05

An inspector calls is coming to us too in January. Intending to book for both DS and DD going into year10. I watched it in London pre kids and it was fantastic. There's also a good film of it with David Thewlis as inspector.
We went to see Jekyll and Hyde a year or so ago. It wasn't the original story but an excellent adaptation....but it was based in a brothel and some quite hairy moments! But I think they got the gist of it!

HereComesYourMam · 01/09/2024 13:38

How funny that three of us were at the same performance! I really enjoyed it, although I did have to stifle giggles at one point when it went a bit Goes Wrong Show with the wonky house 😂

It's her making a studying account on tiktok. She basically posts day in the life revising for my GCSE videos and then she interacts with others providing tips and helpful information. I'm fine with it as she's not posting her face and it seems to be motivating her to try more!!

destiel00 · 30/08/2024 08:56

I've never understood the S&L in English language...it should form part of the end grade, surely?

It was decoupled in the Gove bonfire.

justasoul · 01/09/2024 14:50

DD rejected going to the theatre to watch An Inspector Calls - coming near us early next year but she already took the test for those units this summer - but she was obsessed with a Chinese version she found on Amazon Prime Grin according to her, much better than the David Thewlis version.

MrsHamlet · 01/09/2024 14:54

I have to teach it and I reject going to see it too. Dreadful play.

justasoul · 01/09/2024 15:05

It’s actually on Netflix 🫣

NotDonna · 01/09/2024 15:19

@MrsHamlet you have to teach it? Don’t teachers have a choice? I always assumed they did as differing classes at my DCs school have always done differing texts. This year DDs English teacher gave them the choice of Macbeth or Romeo & Juliet. A bit harsh teaching a play that you don’t enjoy.
DD3 has English coursework (as well as exams) that my other two never had. I’m not sure I like it as it’s open to cheating but her English has come on leaps and bounds as she does draft after draft (no help from us). Her vocabulary has definitely improved alongside sentence structure as she has opportunities to keep improving. Maybe my other two made similar improvements and it’s just that the coursework highlights this.

MrsHamlet · 01/09/2024 15:20

@NotDonna we all have to teach the same texts, which are dictated to us from on high. It's ghastly.

@justasoul I'm now very pleased that I don't have Netflix 🤣

justasoul · 01/09/2024 15:26

@MrsHamlet 🤣 I’ve been told it’s hilarious Grin not sure if intentionally or not!

MrsHamlet · 01/09/2024 15:28

@justasoul hilarious? Interesting!

I'd still rather squeeze lime juice in my eye though

marshallmum · 01/09/2024 15:46

Hello, joining the thread as I have 2 going into y11 this year.
Both are doing Maths, English Lang and Literature, Combined Science - DS is then doing French, Computer Science and BTEC business, and DD is doing Spanish, History and Geography. They both did RE in y10 as it’s compulsory for their school, so have had a practice round already.

They haven’t had any work to do over the holidays… their y10 results were overall pretty good and we left them to it for revision, so whatever they are doing seems to be working! They recognise it will ramp up this year though so we’re prepared for that.

It’s a delicate balance though, they both have diagnoses of ASD/ADHD, so we’re trying to encourage them enough to achieve what they are capable of, without overwhelming them and going into panic mode.

marshallmum · 01/09/2024 15:48

… and we’re going to see An Inspector Calls at Ally Pally mid-September, I’ve never read it so thought it would be helpful but sounds like it may not be the best idea I’ve had!

phoenix28 · 01/09/2024 15:52

Joining as I have one starting Y11 tomorrow

Did absolutely nothing over the summer so not sure how he'd cope with the onslaught of work this term

Oblomov24 · 01/09/2024 15:57

@HereComesYourMam

I thought the table collapsing was on purpose!

Isn't it funny that 3 of us were there!

Ds2 has seen Macbeth, Jekyll and Hyde and now Inspector. (Plus I went to see The importance of being Earnest which I booked by accident). Ds2 had been basically unimpressed by all 3. I don't know why I bothered tbh. I thought they were all ok, just, not great. We both agreed no more theatre!

HereComesYourMam · 01/09/2024 16:09

Yes I'm sure it was on purpose, but when the fiance came clambering down through the room it just really reminded me of the Goes Wrong Show!

elkiedee · 01/09/2024 18:33

Hi all, I posted occasionally last year on year 10 threads but not very consistently.

DS2 was set lots of English GCSE work to do in 6 chunks, and hasn't done any of it, starts back on Thursday (after 2 inset days and one just for year 7, then Thursday is years 11 and 7 and all 5 years are back from Friday). I got DP to look at what he's meant to do because the email to me just said that there's homework set on Microsoft Teams, but DP didn't really get the detail.

DS1 did his GCSEs in 2023, and didn't do much work, really, until after a first round of mocks fairly early in year 11 (they also did more in March). DS2 has already had 2 lots of practice exams in year 10, and apparently improved quite a bit between the first and the second set, but I've realised I haven't seen his most recent results. I think I'm going to have to chase up better information from school, and point out how difficult I find it to press DS2 on English homework without being able to see what has been set.

destiel00 · 01/09/2024 18:36

Dd has only been to see a woman in Black so far
Was supposed to see merchant, but was ill on the day
Might try and see if animal farm is on anywhere locally

MrsHamlet · 01/09/2024 18:37

Now, the woman in black is a play worth seeing. Gets me every time.
