Do I tell my classes I am pregnant?

I'm a secondary Maths teacher and 17 weeks pregnant (so due in late Sept). I'm starting to show a bit but wondering whether to tell my classes I am pregnant or just leave them to guess (if they do!). Apart from my L6 class (who I will tell) they won't be affected as I wouldn't be teaching them next year.

Don't want to make a big deal out of it - what did/would you do?

I would tell them. They will be guessing anyway. I only have to have had a too much lunch meaning i have a slightly bloaty stomach and they think i am pregnant.

only tell them if they ask. and don't be surprised at some of the comments - I had "Do you know who the father is miss?" from one of my year 10s

or another comment from one of mine - uggh that means you've been up to that stuff!

At that age I wuld have just presumed you were fat, but wouldn't have cared, because you were so OLD, and old people are fat.(I was such a lovely teenager!) I would tell them at around 20 weeks.

oh and don't be surprised if they don't ask! I was about 6 months pregnant with no 3 (so quite large) when someone asked...! I guess they don't want to get it wrong! Good timing for late sept btw - you can start mat leave at beginning of Sept and if you want to go back , you can start getting paid from the first Sunday of the long school holiday the following July!

Maybe it is just me but my classes are obsessed with me getting pregnant. Probably as we have a few female staff on maternity leave at the moment, they are waiting for us to drop at any moment.

worzella · 17/04/2008 14:47

maybe mine just think I'm either too old or too miserable!

Kids in our school, notice EVERYTHING, including who even looks a tiny bit pregnant. They'll have guessed long ago.....

When my form found out I was pregnant (y10), I got a lecture on healthy eating from them, as I had admitted to eating pizza one evening, and was told I would have to get married as this was the proper way!!

When pregnant with dd2 I was asked "Hey miss, did the condom break?'

rofl!!!

Thanks for all the comments - have decided to tell - told my Yr 9 class this morning and had a really nice reaction - pleased I let them know. No rude comments at all - they were just wondering if it will be a boy or girl (not finding out!)

rofl about "did the condom break" hana

We have also had quite a few female staff on maternity leave recently (including me for the first half of last year - dd is coming up for 17 mths - bu tlast time I wasn't really showing at the end of the summer term and by September there was no doubting it...

Pleased with the way the timing has worked out - mat leave will run from 31st Aug to 25 May and will probably take unpaid leave until the end of term and go back at the start of the summer hols - I think it would be a bit disruptive for classes to suddenly have a new teacher just for the last few weeks of term.
