Do secondary school kids get school reports??

DD finishes school next week and we've not yet had a report. A family member says they don't do this anymore so I don't want to call the school if it's an obvious thing but I've also received no information over the year and imagine they have to tell us something. Parents evening was in the first few weeks where teachers openly admitted they couldn't pick the kids from a line up. They are also due to be streamed from next year and again no update.

DD is in year seven. First year of secondary.

No, our school doesn't do any kind of formal report, and half the teachers weren't available for parent's evening either. The school makes a big song and dance about communication with parents, but never tells us what we really want to know. I would email the Head Of Year to check.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 16/07/2024 12:33

We get a very simple report with a grade for their end of year test and a grade for 'attitude to learning'

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 16/07/2024 12:37

The school I worked in before I retired did monthly tracking for effort and behaviour for junior classes and was more subject specific for further up the school. So you get any regular info? They also moved to two parents nights a year and three for exam classes.

WeneedSamVimesonthecase · 16/07/2024 12:39

We got a mid-year report and were expecting an end-of-year one, especially as they did end of year exams, but perhaps we won’t get one? First year of secondary for us too!

PuttingDownRoots · 16/07/2024 12:40

Yes but its numbers not any comments etc from teachers. Attainment grade, predicted progress, target grade, then a separate grade for worth ethic/behaviour

This

ours only came out yesterday. Given pieces of paper don’t always get home if children don’t want them to, I think you should contact school and ask if they do them. Then either you’ll know, or you can ask about if there’s other info about current achievement levels you can have.

dementedpixie · 16/07/2024 12:46

Ours did a tracking and monitoring report thing every so often which gave a number for what stage they were at now and what they were aiming for.

SilenceInside · 16/07/2024 12:47

I think that the govt guidelines is that you get at least one report each year. When I was teaching (secondary) I would have expected to do at least one report per year, and usually more.

For Year 7, often you get a settling-in report in the Autumn term and then a full report in the Summer. At the school my child attends, also Year 7, we have had 4 reports this year - an initial behaviour-based report 6 weeks into the year, and then a report each term. Those reports have been effort and attainment grades, plus the results of internal termly tests.

PatriciaHolm · 16/07/2024 12:49

It's a mandatory requirement for an update report before the end of term.

ichundich · 16/07/2024 12:50

Ours (private) does 2 a year.

Lemonade2011 · 16/07/2024 12:55

We get 2 mini reports that don’t really say much at all tbh. But any issues at school we’d get phoned/emailed. Never off the phone for youngest just now but 3rd son doing great and eldest 2 have left school

coastingcoffee · 16/07/2024 12:56

Yes a full report from each class taken and overall comments from Head of Year Form Tutor.

Plus Grades and Attitudes towards Learning at above/at/below expectations

How else are you meant to know if your child is performing/behaving well at school?

Custardandrhubarbcrumble · 16/07/2024 13:00

We get an interim report every term (ie 3 times a year) which is just grades, marks for effort in class and in homework and something showing whether they are achieving their expected range of grades. Then at the end of year we get the same but with a line or two of personal comment by form tutor.

If you are getting no information from school about their progress i would definitely be emailing to query this.

noblegiraffe · 16/07/2024 13:03

Yes you should get an end of year report (not necessarily written, it could be grades for effort, attainment, homework in each subject with a general tutor comment) and you should also have had an opportunity to discuss progress with their teachers (usually parents evenings).

circular2478 · 16/07/2024 13:04

We got an end of school report with general comments from each teacher.

chickensandbees · 16/07/2024 13:06

We get one a term, usually attitude to learning, target grade and predicted grade, sometimes teacher comments as well.

We have parents evening once a year.

I don't know how you would know how they were progressing without this, much better than one at the end of the year when it's too late to do anything about it.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/07/2024 13:07

Although DD shows me the paper copy (they stick them in their planners) all the reports are actually available online for us as well... so check any communication apps. (Its on SIMS for us)

DrCoconut · 16/07/2024 13:15

Ours are online. Do you have a portal or similar to log in to?

Clutterbugsmum · 16/07/2024 13:19

We get reports Christmas, Easter and July. I expect ours to be sent out on Thursday as per every year. School finishes on Friday.

Applesarenice · 16/07/2024 14:31

Possibly online? Lots of schools moving away from paper ones

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 16/07/2024 18:34

Thank you for the responses. I feel comfortable chasing now. The whole thing has been a joke tbh. Any contact is driven by me and I've had to chase info from the teachers. Only some responded. Yet they constantly call me to say that DD needs picking up due to her anxiety but then tell me it will be an unauthorised absence. 😡

Yes emailed.

Has grades for achievement and effort plus a short paragraph of prose per subject together with a paragraph from Form Tutor, Head of Year and a line from Head teacher commenting on the comments.

SummerBarbecues · 16/07/2024 18:53

DC is in year 8 in a comp. We get a report every term. Last year it has GCSE marks the teacher thinks they will get if they were to sit GCSE then, and also where their score sat within their cohort. This year they have change reporting and it’s more vague. We get targets to work towards for each subject and also if they are making expected or exceeding progress. We were told the progress is measured against KS2 marks for a child. And they give a predicted GCSE score against KS2 score.

bubbles3258 · 16/07/2024 18:58

We get an annual report but it doesn't actually tell you anything about their progress or current attainment.
