Good morning,

I’m tearing my hair out with where to find school skirts for my very tall Year 10 daughter in ladies size 14/16 NOT age 14. Any ideas?

TIA

What colour?

MysticCatLady · 13/07/2024 10:14

They've only got black and grey in a 32' waist, 22' length. I think a 30' waist is a lady's size 12 and a 32' is size 14 equivalent.

Bungle2 · 13/07/2024 16:29

Thank you so much! It’s black we need. I’m nearly 6ft myself and we’re all Amazonian in stature 😬its just frustrating that the main suppliers still stick to these sizings

Could you go with a black work skirt from Next or M&S?

Just get her an extra long skirt age 15 or 16 most uniform suppliers sell them. A size 14/16 skirt is not going to fit a 14/15 year old unless she is also very overweight which you haven't mentioned.

When my Dd got to size 14 16 women's when in high school we ended up in Bon Marche of all places, they had black trousers and skirts in her size and length.

She has specifically said size 14/16 not age 14, so obviously that is the size she needs.

So really this just reads like a dig 🤷🏻‍♀️

My girls same age, size 12-14. I get womens wear for her.

cloudy477654 · 13/07/2024 17:29

Have you tried Next/M&S/Asda? They usually have a good range of lengths and styles. Asda definitely do ladies sizes for older girls (as in not age 14-15 etc).
Or a plain black skirt just from a ladies section not a school one? Maybe somewhere that does a "tall" range would have more options for her.

I think you have your own issues if that's how you read my post. The op was clarifying not a standard age 14 but a size 14/16. And then mentioned her dd being very tall as the reason for the size 14/16. A size 14/16 will not fit a tall year 10 child unless they are also overweight. Not everyone is aware long length skirts exist.
If the op wanted a size 14/16 due to weight surely she would have said my dd is a size 14/16 in women's clothing I am struggling to find a skirt that fits her. Not she is exceptionally tall so age 14 doesn't fit.

With respect, “overweight” what utter horseplopsies! My tall (5ft6.5), very slender 11 YEAR OLD takes school clothes in age 15-16 which equates to about ladies 10-12.

OP - some places like M&S do sizes to age 18 and then in 29, 31 inches etc. failing that you’ll need the adult section.

Edited

She didn’t say she needed a size 14/16 because her daughter was very tall. Perhaps that is what she meant, but it’s not what she said.

Yes, I know she said she was very tall. She also specifically said a size 14/16, so I was assuming she is very tall and also a size 14/16 and they are two separate barriers to finding a school skirt which fits.

Bungle2 · 13/07/2024 18:46

She’s 5ft 9 and counting. Is she very overweight? I don’t think so. She does have a very womanly figure: big bust, curvy bottom etc as I did at her age. Although I feel like I’ve spent a lifetime justifying my stature as I tower over many men so don’t feel I should have to justify hers! I can’t find anything in the M&S women’s section that my (RIP) gran wouldn’t have worn. Will try Next. Thanks to all those who offered helpful comments

And this is ignorant nonsense. In the same way that my 10lb 9oz baby went into 3-6 month clothing at birth (!!!) my children have never been able to fit the “correct” clothing for their size. My very slim 9 year old wears 11-12 clothes because of her height. The older two hit puberty very early and have figures that are far more womanly than their years. I wonder if you would have jumped in to fat-shame my daughter had she been a boy looking for men’s clothes 🤔 thanks for your time anyway…

I think my point went right over you head. I said your daughter is obviously tall rather than overweight therefore what you need is a skirt that is long in the length rather than big in the waist. Your dd and I are the same height I need dresses skirts to be long but a size 14/16 would be far too big in the waist and I am an average size ( bmi 21 so pretty much in the middle of a healthy weight) I was maybe wrongly assuming you thought a size 14/16 would be just be longer than age 14 when actually the waist will be considerebly bigger also. My daughters are tall and slim so consequently they wore pinafores all through primary as a skirt with the waist that fit would have shown their underwear. They wear pyjamas with bobbles like tails or the bottoms drop to the floor. I was simply trying to help as a parent will similarly very tall dd's.
