I have a lot to say, don't know if anyone remembers the thread. Let me know if you want to hear from me.

What’s wrong with saying that London is a good place to live and work? I think it is - and so must you since you do exactly that!

I think London is a wonderful place to live and work.

My family lives here.

This is a revealed preference if there ever was one.

OP posts:
Baital · 09/07/2024 18:45

Well, not a life of 'quiet desperation ' for me or my friends. Just valuing relationships and community, and appreciating that we have a good place to live, our children are safe and well educated etc

If you want to believe you are better because you have more money, that your DS is better because of the Uni he is going to, that he will earn more than our children, well, crack on. You seem to need to believe that.

But, there will always be people with more than you!

Baital · 09/07/2024 18:47

Oh, and I don't know about Middlesbrough or Clacton, but I visited Glasgow a lot because a friend was at Uni there.

Fantastic city, interesting history and culture, and great (plain speaking! people)

statesmom · 09/07/2024 18:33

I think there are some demented people here, who if in reality were able to relocate to Seatle tomorrow, would rip your arm off for the opportunity. But they have to convince themselves that their lives of quiet desperation are far superior to Palo Alto and Miami.

Maybe it's wonderful in Glasgow and Middleborough? Yeah, tons of Yanks applying to move to Clacton. Future of the world there: tech, AI, you name it!

I’ve travelled extensively to the US for work and DSil lived in Chicago and now Aspen - she is planning a move back to Canada as soon as she can.
DH and I could have easily moved to the US - no difficulties in getting a green card due to our professions but wouldn’t live there for all the tea in China - the threat of a lunatic like Trump will deter anyone with some common sense.

statesmom · 09/07/2024 18:47

Baital · 09/07/2024 18:36

Well, I did work for a time in the USA (Pennsylvania, not Seattle). I didn't enjoy it, people were too self-centred.

This is, people, why we women are held in such low esteem.

This post is emotional, pointless and devoid of any meaningful content. I am embarrassed for our sex. It is folderol.

Statesmom: "The US has more Nobels, 40% greater income, higher productivity, more patents, more global influence, happier people . . . . . "

Baital: "Well, I lived there and didn't like it. So you're wrong."

Really? Is this the best you've got?

OP posts:
Baital · 09/07/2024 18:48

No, just replying to your suggestion that those of us disagreeing with you would jump at the chance to live in the US.

See this?

Proves my point.

I talk about national statistics, global comparisons and so on.

What is the response?

"Well my daughter lived there but wants to move back to Canada."

Does anyone realize that this proves nothing at all? Sad, but oddly funny to me. Like: is this how you argue a point?

OP posts:
Baital · 09/07/2024 18:52

Well, the number of Nobel Laureates, global patents etc is irrelevant to most of the population. Quality of life matters.

We didn’t decide where to live based on the numbers of Nobel prize winners or higher productivity - we decided on where we felt most connected and a good fit. Places we didn’t like, we rejected

TheBossOfMe · 09/07/2024 18:53

Honestly I don’t think @statesmom can even see how much she’s contradicting herself.

Why on earth would she think that going to Uni in the Uk condemns one to living in Clacton? Where does she think most of the professionals in London were educated???

And having lived in the US (the lovely west coast tech jobs that she thinks is the be all and end all) and the UK (funnily enough, turns out I can do the same job here for the same money and a much lower cost of living) I know which I prefer.

We live where we are happy not because of the global figures of the city or country.

I mean it's like: OK lady, I understand what your family's preferences are.

Against that, SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND UK nationals moved to the US.

Do you think, uh, maybe, that that's more relevant to the discussion than what your daughter wants to do with her life?

This is like playing chess with checkers players, frankly.

You are again putting your value over others. You think women don't aspire as you do are embarrassing and low esteem. Are you the benchmark for human society? How ridiculous.

Nobody wants to say you are wrong to choose what you feel best for you. But "good" "best" are subjective. You can't value things in one way. And you need to learn "respect" for others, which is absent all the way through this post.

I sympathise you honestly.

And I agree with you, this post is becoming pointless. I'm leaving and hope others stop giving the attention you crave too.

looks like Americans are keen on the UK

Americans rank Britain as the best country in the world, poll reveals

The U.S. News & World Report survey - which aggregates data from worldwide respondents in a range of categories - found its American readers rated the UK as better than anywhere else.

I hope the SEVEN HUNDRED THOUSAND UK nationals moving to the USA are happy there.

I tried it, and wasn't. Each to their own

Baital · 09/07/2024 19:01

After all, you'll probably have Rishi Sunak soon, after his failure here 😂

londonmummy1966 · 09/07/2024 19:13

I'm afraid you are as guilty as anyone else of citing facts out of context eg

Statesmom: "The US has more Nobels", yes but that's only 1.23 per 1m capita compared with the UKs 2.03 - in fact every country with more than 2 Nobels per 1m of population are in Europe.

Maybe it's wonderful in Glasgow and Middleborough? Yeah, tons of Yanks applying to move to Clacton

There's a reason we refer to a small town or village that is not interesting or modern as Hicksville - at least Clacton has the sea Amhurst doesn't even have that. I'd be quite happy to live in a vibrant city like Glasgow - much more interesting than Raleigh, Jacksonville or Hartford.

TheBossOfMe · 09/07/2024 18:37

I think your values and the values of most of the people in the UK aren’t particularly aligned. And if you think gun ownership and being anti abortion is a good thing, I’m not sure why you live here.

Because we don't want her in New York @TheBossOfMe (where I also have a house, despite choosing to live in London).

If she were to move back to the states, in order to find a lot of like-minded people, she'd have to go somewhere where she'd be surrounded by the type of people she disdains even more than Oxbridge grads 😂

pandasorous · 09/07/2024 19:20

@statesmom 😂😂😂😂😂 I've never been to the US and don't intend to go there until the racism and gun issues are a little bit more under control. have no desire to be shot in the face by the police or a disgruntled teenager or treated abysmally as a woman of colour.
I would not move to the US unless someone literally held to a gun to my head and even then I would have second thoughts.
if I ever move out of the uk (and the thought has crossed my mind) it 1000% won't be the US, a nice place in the southern hemisphere (probably SEA) with great weather is currently the plan. somewhere safe and actually well developed, unlike the US.

Baital · 09/07/2024 19:28

Actually thinking about it, the friend I used to visit in Glasgow was a dual US/ UK citizen and did post-doc work at Harvard. And chose to return to the UK, preferring the quality of life here.

@statesmom the problem here is, you are right and most of the rest of us have no money. So we have to do what we can to keep our families happy and in the U.K.

Well done @statesmom you've managed to united MN which is no easy feat!! 😂😂😂

ConfusedBrit · 09/07/2024 20:13

@statesmom Can I ask where you would send your child other than Westminster if you went back in time to have the highest chances of a top U.S. university (boy and girl)? I agree that I want my children to have the best chance of going to a top school in the U.S.

I'm surprised this is 23 pages and hasn't been asked yet...
