Study leave

What do schools do re study leave at gcses?

Our school has said you are in or out of school.

No flexibility. It means most kids have left school.

What does MN think?

Our Y11 have all been at home since the day before the first GCSE.
They are asked to go back in to prizegiving on the penultimate day of term but most won't
There is always a quiet classroom available for anyone who doesn't have a place to study but it changes every lesson.
Pretty standard around here but I think it's a bit of anti-climatic way to finish secondary

There's no study leave at our schools. They are in all day until the last GCSE exam. If they are not in an exam they are in a study class. It's very full on.

Extra after school revision sessions and weekend sessions are also being provided. Thankfully these are optional as personally, I think it's a bit too much.

Our secondary school didn't do study leave. My eldest found it stressful being around other pupils talking about the exams, being made to study what others wanted etc (there's a history of anxiety). she was very motivated to revise so I wrote to the school and explained and they made an allowance for her to go home after the exams.

My middle actually likes the interventions and lessons so she is going in. But she knows that if she finds it stressful I will support her to come home too

No study leave at the moment but they can go in for exams only, after the half term next week.

Bluevelvetsofa · 22/05/2024 15:06

I think that study leave is a diminishing event.

I'd prefer a flexible solution.
Yes it's an awful way to finish secondary school.
I'm sure we stayed until end of July!

Prefer them to be in and be able to leave when they want to.

I realise the registers will be harder. But surely they could allow some resource for signing themselves out with some staff present.

Ours have been on study leave since just after the bank holiday.

No study leave in my school. Most students actually prefer the support from staff.

Finished school on 9 May 1996, only back in for exams after that. In reflection, I’d have hated having to go in for revision but having almost 4 months off until I went to sixth form college (all separate here) was disastrous as I just pissed around and definitely wasn’t wanting to go back into school work.

After the holiday they only have to go in for exams, although each classroom and teacher will be available on their usual timetable.
Although they've been in these last few weeks it's been pretty relaxed and they've been allowed to revise/cram for exams rather than take part in lessons if they want to.
The school have got a lot wrong over the years but this seems to be working quite well for DS.
