Did anyone's kids find the maths edexcel hard today?

Yes my DS has come home very unhappy. He is a high achiever so this is not good.
He said the format has changed from previous years.
What have others said?

JudeGarret · 16/05/2024 18:21

Mine said he felt prepared but now I'm freaking out as the general consensus said it was hard as did his tutor

MultiplaLight · 16/05/2024 18:22

Teacher here. Very fair paper imo. Enough to challenge the top end but also plenty for everyone to access.

The format was the same as usual, not sure what he means by that.

Notstrongandstable · 16/05/2024 18:26

Yes my DS said "everyone " thought it was hard and he didn't manage to answer 3 questions unfortunately

OmuraWhale · 16/05/2024 18:27

DD also thought it was hard.

hattylou · 16/05/2024 18:29

Sorry he did Pearsons. Are so many boards.

Pharos · 16/05/2024 18:32

Ds said it was hard but felt he did his best.
There was one question in particular he said was really challenging and he had no idea about how to do it - very little information to work with, only one of his 9 predicted mates got anywhere near a decent answer.

Pharos · 16/05/2024 18:33

@hattylou Pearson is Edexcel 🙂

Flyhigher · 16/05/2024 19:04

My school also said only the top kids said it was fine. All the rest found it hard. Format was different. The third question was hard. Normally an easy one apparently. It threw a lot of them.

The higher paper was fine, some of the earlier questions were extremely straightforward. There was a jar question that some didn't like near the start. The last 3 questions were difficult so someone expecting to be able to answer the whole paper might have struggled.

Flyhigher · 16/05/2024 19:29

It was OCR sorry!

Did any teachers look at the maths ocr higher paper?

Our school changed board in year 11. So not sure it had helped!

Yep. General consensus from eldest and friends was that it was a stinker. Feeling a bit dejected.

Tiredalwaystired · 16/05/2024 22:23

Them not me!

hattylou · 17/05/2024 07:13

Ok so it was tough in places for most then. Son isn't a talker at the moment but all I know is it was tougher than what he was expecting.
I can't ask him about it as he has chemistry and geography today and needs to move forward. But he wanted to do A level maths and if he doesn't do well may have to re think everything.
This is tough in parents also isn't it. I had to buy special cookies on way home last night to try and cheer him up ( I'm not big on sweet snacks normally but this was an emergency).

Please can I pass on some advice for your children? It's too late for maths, sorry.

If it is a hard paper, it will be hard for everyone, some people will panic. Panicking wastes time, so just plod through it. You can miss bits and go back to pick up more marks.
