2nd in music dept at dd1 and 2's school left today - job advertised on website from Sept. I was HoD till 10 years ago - though mainly in more challenging schools than dds' grammar school. Since then I've done return to teaching course (primary) and specialist dyslexia course as well as v p/t music teaching and ks2 supply, plus had 4th and final child who starts school in Sept.

I'd love this job - taught A level thogh not for a no. of years, have good original qualifications but obv not taught full time for a few years. How would you go about it? I assume first of all check who's covering music for the next term. Before I knew this teacher was leaving was going to approach school to ask to shadow/volunteer with a view to returning. Ask to go in see HoD? She knows I used to teach music. It's a bit harder as it's dds' school.

Sorry - this sounds like a total ramble but I know I'd love the job. Any advice gratefully received.

Why not give the school a call and discuss the position Good Luck

Thanks. Don't know why I'm dithering - partly because I haven't done the job for ages (though know I'm good at it and partly that dds go there!!! Wouldn't hesitate about phoning otherwise. I know there are a few parents of pupils who teach at the school. They are happy with it as long as I wear nice clothes - that's teenagers for you!

I say you just apply for it! You'll want a very sharp covering letter and CV.

It sounds like you've done plenty to ease yourself back in. If the school doesn't think it's enough, you'll have lost nothing but gained interview experience and feedback.

Most schools welcome 'informal' visits from candidates ahead of interviews.

Thanks - worked out who's covering next term. I'll work on my application letter and just go for it. It's just a confidence thing I think after all these years! As you say, I can't lose anything by applying.
