Grammar school waiting lists

Hi there
we just got an email from Queen Mary high school in Birmingham saying that we are in the waiting list in 29th place. This really disheartened us as we thought because my daughter passed her 11+ with a score of 213 and is on pupil premium we may be higher up the waiting list but then again I don’t have much experience with these waiting lists and I don’t know how fast they clear up. Can someone who knows how this works please let me know how many spaces become free from now till about September time and do you think we have a chance of getting accepted before school starts. To be honest we don’t mind if a space comes free till about December time.

I would check with the school that your daughter is definitely in the right admissions catagory - ie pupil premium etc. It is always worth checking this in my view.

Apart from that I don't know the school so I couldnt say re the waiting list. I am sorry though - I know how stressful this all is.

Given that your DD did achieve better than the qualifying score (it says somewhere on the website that thus was 195), then there must have been more than 45 girls applying who are eligible for Pupil Premium and so they were ranked B1 then B2 and either your DD is in a Walsall state primary and there were more than 45 PP applicants who were, or she isn't, and the ranked score of the 45th girl was above your DD's.
(This is assuming that you supplied the necessary evidence of her status on time, of course).

It also says on the website that the score of the last place offered on March 1st was 216.

Eta here's the bit with the relevant table (with approximate comparisons between this year's scores fir the new 'pan West Midlands' test, which are standardised to 200, and those of previous years, which were standardised to 300:

yes, I understand the reason why we’re on the waiting list I knew we probably won’t get the place as we applied late, just wondering why we’re so lower down in the waiting list
