2024 waiting list/appeal support thread

Hopeful88 · 18/03/2024 01:09

I thought I'd start a support thread for everyone in the same position - either waiting on appeal outcomes or hoping for a secondary school place from a waiting list.
I've read all the advice I can and I'm doing the best I can but I'm still struggling with the unknown.
We're currently in the 20s on the waiting list for our first choice school and an unknown number for the second choice.
Fingers crossed for everyone in the same position. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

We just got notification of an unsuccessful appeal via email. Very soon as it was only heard yesterday. I'm trying not to spiral. 😢

Sorry to hear that Hopeful 💐, deep breaths.
You mentioned appealing two schools, is there still one appeal/decision in the pipeline?
What are your concerns about the school you’ve been allocated?

MsJuniper · 10/05/2024 17:36

So sorry to hear that @Hopeful88 Flowers

Really sorry to hear this. I hope the second appeal is successful. Thinking of you all. This is a brutal process and so dragged out

@Hopeful88

Really sorry to hear this 💐

@Hopeful88 how are you doing? Feeling any more positive about DC’s secondary future? Have to go through all the stages of grief I think with this - even though it seems extreme there’s denial, shock, anger then comes the acceptance but it’s sometimes a longer road to get through all of those stages

Sunflowers189 · 12/05/2024 10:28

Just to reassure some, we went through this last year also with our eldest, we were given a school that is much less desirable within the area through word of mouth.

The results could be a lot better too. However our daughter is extremely happy and found a lovely circle of like minded friends and academics are ok also . I understand that not everyone will experience what we have but there are some happy endings from what we thought would be the worst outcome.

I'm feeling a lot better. It was our second choice but I feel like our back up has gone. I think I'm ok with it now though, I actually haven't thought about it much.

@Hopeful88 well done on being so brave. Let’s march on to September.

Hopeful88 · 13/05/2024 11:32

We are now number 4 on the waiting list for our first choice school. Although, like our second choice, the school have only offered two places since allocation day due to only two withdrawals.
I'm not sure whether to get my hopes up or not, I know we could end up moving down on the list if more people apply.

How is everyone else doing with the waiting and uncertainty?

Finding it really hard. We're 4th too and hoping for a grammar school place. Apparently drop in private school admissions due to VAT introduction with Labour is affecting movement.

Just hoping DD does well in SATs this week despite it all. She.knows she's on the WL.

AllSuggestionsTaken · 13/05/2024 12:31

Finding it tough too.
For us, this isn’t a ‘preference’ appeal because we didn’t get first choice. We got none of our choices and an allocated school that is failing and regularly has fights outside it!
Our first appeal isn’t until early June, which feels a long way away.
DS is stressing about SATs anyway - we’re trying very hard to keep positive all round!

Supamum3 · 13/05/2024 16:41

We were unsuccessful on our first choice appeal, like you @Hopeful88 we got the email the following day so didn’t feel very thought out.
Though I am glad it’s over, I am sad of the certainty that my child won’t go to that school.

We have another appeal shortly for our 2nd choice but we are no.11 on the waiting list so we are hopeful. We are also 2nd place on our 3rd choice waiting list so we are feeling ok for the time being. Next round of offers in end of May.

Sending you good vibes for your waiting list.

Morning all, stage 1 of my appeal today. 60 parents appealing the same school. Stage 2 on Monday. It says outcome within 24 hours and then detailed reasoning within 10 days so that explains why many of you had a very quick reply. At least we e

Rinse123 · 16/05/2024 07:59

Sorry hit send prematurely. At least we will have an outcome soon and can move on to acceptance with the outcome.

prh47bridge · 16/05/2024 08:08

we got the email the following day so didn’t feel very thought out

The appeal panel usually make their decisions on the day of the hearings. Parents must be notified of the outcome and the panel's reasons within 5 school days unless there is good reason for taking longer. Some admission authorities make parents wait until the clerk and the chair of the panel have reviewed all the notification letters, others give the outcome quickly and follow up with the full letter later.

Rinse123 · 16/05/2024 09:38

Hi @prh47bridge thank you for your reply. The clerk emailed to say for mine outcome within 24 hours for initial email outcome so this must be how they have decided to do it on this occasion. I’m sure many different approaches are followed depending on the panel/clerk/numbers of appeals.
