How is everyone feeling about the fact that we find out tomorrow which secondary school our Year 6 children will be going to?

I am wondering whether to stay up till midnight to wait for the email 🙈

I feel sick. We have 3 options and I've not put our catchment school down. Massively worried (but had a good reason why, it's actually further and harder to get to independently than the 3 I've put down). I've been fine until we got this close and now I'm scared we won't get anywhere at all not even catchment. I am told they usially arrive by 8ish round here but I can't see me sleeping

I did this too. I'm either going to be thrilled or kicking myself but too late now! Good luck!

TheHennaHairedHarridan · 29/02/2024 23:00

We only have three options! I would be happy with any of the three tbh.

And no portal, we have to wait for an email.

Mummyratbag · 01/03/2024 00:28

I haven't got an email - but went to portal at 12.04 and it said we got 1st choice (which I wasn't really expecting) - good luck to everyone!

Widgets · 01/03/2024 00:35

Same here no email yet but the online portal showed the offered place. Thankfully we got our first choice.

EricaJohns · 01/03/2024 00:45

Email arrived, got 1st choice, relieved.

Now I have to contact the school to organise starting in September. Seems so far away, but it'll be here in the blink of an eye. 😁

FairfaxHigh · 01/03/2024 00:46

Ours went on the portal at exactly midnight. Got our 1st choice- knew very likely due to sibling, but still had The Fear that I'd messed up the application somehow!

Good luck everyone.

ThemysteriousH · 01/03/2024 00:51

I’ve stayed up and no email, rural wales, I only put one school and out of the catchment.

Quite complicated, parents have parental rights of DS1 also (MH post partum hospital stay).
The school is closer to them but also a smaller school with better needs for his circumstances- he too struggles socially/emotionally.
School in our catchment is literally 10x the size & a very bad rep. We live in a “rough” area.

Im also in and out of hospital a lot so whilst there is buses from parents to the school we’ve picked, there isn’t one coming to the town I live in.

Basically it’s complicated and really need this choice but it’s a long shot.

40andfeelingit · 01/03/2024 00:57

Checked the portal at midnight, took an age to get in but we got first choice.
And that pretty much means child no 2 is in next year.
Feeling very relieved

elliejjtiny · 01/03/2024 01:19

Ds4 has an ehcp so we found out during half term. We asked for our catchment school and the senco said that they could accommodate him but they needed more funding. L.A. have us the school we wanted but not the extra money. Kind of wishing we had asked for the lovely SEN school and then the LA might have been willing to compromise by giving us the catchment school with the extra money.

realdays · 01/03/2024 01:28

2nd choice here. Son is going to be very upset in the morning ☹️

Hopebridge · 01/03/2024 02:02

Got a waitlist for grammar so going to not such a good school for now. It was a e mail and the portal isn't showing an offer so must take time to update. My son had 3 yeses for his application so a shock and not looking forward to telling him so struggling to get back to sleep 😭 Good luck everyone.

We're in exactly the same position. Sending you some very positive vibes. Off to phone the grammar later this morning to see if I can get an idea about waiting list. We have quite a unique circumstance which means that DS should be top of the waiting list or very near the top but does anyone turn down a place at a grammar school - I'm thinking not Confused

Pearl97 · 01/03/2024 02:22

We have friends about to turn a grammar place down in favour of a private school. It does happen. People also relocate. Keep the faith.

CheesecakeandCrackers · 01/03/2024 02:27

Got our offer, none of our choices nor catchment. School offered is slightly further but not any worse really than catchment and potentially better as it has a bus. I am waiting for my Y6 to wake to see how he feels. 90% of his year will be in his first choice school so I'm expecting disappointment sadly. If I want to put him on the wait list for another school does anyone know how I do that?

Thank you - really appreciate that. We've been given a second choice that is OK but I'm now panicking that I should have put down as a second choice a school that more of DS' friends are going to. Argh

I think it's possible to email the council and ask to be put on waiting lists for schools not applied for or further down the preference list

Are “feeder” schools an actual thing or is it just a way of describing when both a primary and secondary are in the same catchment

people tell me that our primary is a “feeder” for the local secondary but that term is not used in any of the council literature. “Feeder” suggests that everyone from the primary gets a place at the secondary but of course it’s not that straightforward

Yes.

The town my dad lives in the RC has a number of 'feeder' schools, all RC of course. One of the feeder schools is in another town 7-8 miles away that doesn't have an RC secondary.

CheesecakeandCrackers · 01/03/2024 02:50

Thank you I've emailed, have also asked for an appeal pack but I am not clear on the grounds. Hopefully when the email notification comes through it will explain how as the council website doesn't mention wait lists at all, and finding an email address was a challenge! I am gutted and dreading having to break the news.

Clearinguptheclutter · 01/03/2024 05:55

no email here but checked the portal when I randomly woke about an hour ago and very lucky to have got our first choice and wheee almost all DS’s pals are going.

sending good luck vibes to all

Helenjohanna · 01/03/2024 07:13

I applied for two secondaries because I had nothing to lose, but we are now feeling that we'll stick with our "extended secondary". All the same, I'm eager to see what my son's been allocated. We're Central Beds and I've been checking the portal, but I don't think it updates. The middle school part just shows my preferences and not what we were allocated. I can't remember now what happened at the time - whether I had an email only.

Devicey · 01/03/2024 07:15

Good luck everyone.

We're Surrey so won't be until this evening.

I can remember my constant refreshing on the primary day and it definitely came up while I was still at work. Wondering if today will be the same.

WingSlutz · 01/03/2024 07:48

Depressing article in the times today saying many children will miss out on their first choice. If I remember correctly there was a baby boom when DS was born (Jan 2013) so that adds up. God I think I might vomit

I googled it and 2012 had a very high birth rate.

This definitely does happen - DS is at a grammar and quite a few turned down their places - the child decided they wanted to go to school with their friends instead; parents realised in the harsh light of day that the commute was ridiculous; family was moving away. There was also a bit of attrition in the first term with children realising it wasn’t really for them (commute, pace of learning).

Uuu... sorry.. Where is that if I may ask?

WingSlutz · 01/03/2024 08:27

I know outcomes won't be released till this evening where I am but I'm still frantically refreshing my inbox every 10 seconds 😁. Also I can't see where on the portal I should look. It says go to My School Admissions but I can't see that page - does it only appear once the outcome is announced?
