Embley School Hampshire

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any recent experience of Embley school in Hampshire?
I've been to an open day this morning and I liked the head teacher, sports facilities and feel of the school but I'm a bit worried about the academic side.

I have a very sporty boy who plays a lot of sport but particularly cricket. He is also bright, especially in maths, he is able in English but can be lazy.

I've heard mixed things about the academic side of Embley including a current parent who is getting extra tutoring for her son's English!

We are also looking at Churcher's College, which I like a lot too but have a slight nagging worry about and I'm not sure why.
Also considering PGS and KES
Thoughts on this would be great.

I clicked on this as my SIL is considering Embley for her DDs, so interested in responses! Just on the tutoring comment, my nieces have always been tutored regardless of what school they are at (both state and private), might not be indicative of anything in particular about academic standards…?

Hello,

My son is at Embley. He started year 7 in September last year so very new for us!

We also looked at KES, boundary oak and the Greggs.

KES would be brilliant for very academic children I find. We thought it was a bit 'clinical' in the whole vibe. But he sat the exams anyway.

Boundary was too far out as we are Southampton.

The Greggs wouldn't accept him as he has ADHD.

So far we think it's great! It depends what school you have come from. My son came from a tiny independent school so it was a bit of a shock at the start. Socially mainly.

Hi

Thank you for your replies.

My son is currently at a very small prep school having previously been at a small state school.

I think I'm wobbling because schools like KES, Churchers and PGS seem big but I think he will benefit from the high level of sport and academic push at these schools.

My daughter started PHS in September, which is an all girls GDST school, which we love for her and feels just right.

I'm just trying to find what feels right for my son. It feels like a big responsibility to get it right!!

Also surprised the Gregg wouldn't take your son due to ADHD!

My mum used to teach there and she was always impressed by their SENCO.

I know! They wouldn't even meet him. He's medicated and we have no issues with his behaviour etc. He has actually been getting top grades of 8's and 9's in nearly most subjects. (Not food tech as he's not a fan 😂)

He's settled in really well now. We couldn't fault the school so far. He is also very sporty and he does a lot during the week and is on their teams. Currently it's hockey in games.

Only had one parent's evening so far I think. It was all done online and we liked all the teachers etc. The online portal to see what they are doing in lessons and for homework is great, his previous school didn't have that. Obviously they are all given an iPad at the start so almost everything is done on there.

Thank you, that's a good insight and I'm really glad to hear how well your son is doing.

I liked the tech side of the school, iPads etc. This is the same at my daughter's school, where they all have to have a device and it is working well so far.
