Epsom College v Reigate Grammar (v St John’s)

We are in the lucky position of our daughter being offered Y7 places at Epsom College, Reigate Grammar (with sport and academic scholarships) and St John’s. Whilst we love the facilities at St John’s we are leaning very firmly towards Epsom in that two way choice, it’s also just around the corner. However, Reigate Grammar is a different offering and we just wonder are we wrong to give up a school with fabulous results. But then if we do go for Reigate Grammar will we regret not opening that opportunity of a fabulous school and grounds like Epsom College, the sort of which seems another world to the comprehensives we went to. Any views? Anyone in a similar position? Nice problem to have of course

I’ve worked in independent schools for 20+ years and Epsom has always had a brilliant reputation. I know a few people who teach there and are very happy. If you’re really undecided, can you ask for another tour and/or a taster day for your daughter?

I went to Epsom! And I wouldn’t send my child there I’m afraid…it was a school full of ‘nouveau riche’ families. Think a lot of Russians, big Range Rover types. There was a lot of bullying and competitiveness to keep up. Eating disorders were also rife. Sorry to be a Debbie downer!

I have 2 DC at Epsom. Highly recommend it, just wonderful and children are thriving. I have friends with children at the other schools you have mentioned and I'd pick EC every time. The house system from year 8 upwards is really special - students have a real sense of belonging.

My oldest DS left Epsom last year - he was really well prepared for uni, and has kept a strong bond with his school friends which I think says a lot about the school.
