non-hothouse boarding schools

I know a similar discussion occurred years back but looking an update on what you recommend for boarding schools that are not such hothouses. Looking more for a holistic child centered approach, whilst not ignoring the academics of course but less emphasis on competition. Any thoughts welcome.

There is a boarding school section on MN so you could try there. Are you looking for single sex or mixed? If single sex boys you could try Bruern Abbey. Generally outside the top ranked boarding schools in the U.K., they aren't full due to lots of factors including cost so it would help if you said geographic area and if you want full boarding (home only for exeats / half term) or home every Saturday night which is more common and somewhere like Bede's may suit.

Thanks for your help! I will repost on there and clarify my request!

Have you looked at Ampleforth College? Very holistic focused on pastoral care. Based on Catholic Benedictine principles (but you don’t have to be Catholic). Still great academics, sport and music but not a hothouse.

Frencham Heights. I know parents, pupils and teachers who like the laid back approach there.
Bedales?
