Hi, I’ve got my ten year old daughter who is starting secondary in September Im still looking at schools! I’m torn between two! I’m sending her to private because from her primary school they said that she is bright enough to be with the private school lot.

school a: has very good GCSE grades. Heard a few negatives from friends about the kids being a bit wimpy and bratty. There’s too many languages to learn and homework is a bit much at times. Teachers are a bit tough on kids and the French teacher is an ass 🤣. Does lots of sports which my daughter loves! Though would have to take all sciences for GCSE

school b: she isn’t a fan of the uniform! Likes the sports! Thinks it’s a bit too posh and it’s massive! Everyone seems a lot friendlier and welcoming than A. She doesn’t know anyone considering it. A bit far. She quite likes it for the sports side. Not sure on the friendship sides though as she has only been to one open day because she was I’ll and thinks everyone has found a friend except her x

please helpp xx

None of then sound great but B slightly better? Not sure why the school said she is bright enough for the private school lot, surely if she is bright she will do well at any school! Are the schools you are looking st selective?

A bit far.
How far? How's she going to get there?

Otherwise B sounds better. Uniform and friendships aren't an issue, she will find friends. Especially in a big school.

B, friendlier without so many reservations.

School A is focused a lot on academics and said an academic private school would probably suit her best x

Very Wierd for teachers to say send private if bright. Very

YourLocal · 09/02/2024 22:30

Yeah that’s what I thought when my daughter came home saying they think she should go to private?

Even though school A is more on academics they are apparently not great at that in the lower bit of the school and B is focused on all of them.

If for any circumstances your child ends in a state school, don’t be too stressed. There are plenty of bright kids in state schools too.

YourLocal · 10/02/2024 07:46

Yes I was only looking at private because I don’t think the teachers are happy with any of the state schools around because of the lack of staff and education not great so maybe that’s why the said go private?

Has she sat the exams/had offers from these two schools?

As if she's in Y6 now then the application/assessment deadlines will very likely have passed.

So you may not have the luxury of choice if they're popular schools. We've already accepted my DDs place for September.

School A.

I know people say uniform is not an issue but actually it will become a big issue for a teenage girl who has to wear something she hates every day. Reasons to dislike school A are a bit weird.

Mischance · 10/02/2024 08:02

they said that she is bright enough to be with the private school lot. - Comp children can be bright too! They just don't get the privileges.

Shouldigoforarunorhavepancakes · 10/02/2024 08:03

Sure! You do whatever suits you and can afford. As a person that has a very bright kid in a state school but works in a highly selective private, I know that teaching and pupil behaviour is not necessary better in the independent schools.

YourLocal · 10/02/2024 08:07

Yes at school A she was at a taster and said these girls in the class she was put in were funny but a bit mad because they were running around having fun and getting in trouble with the strict teachers ! She said all the were doing is running around outside screaming nonsense and the teachers were saying to stop it because they weren’t real words?!
