Music Aptitude test (MAT) for 11 plus

mesha123 · 31/01/2024 17:13

Hi,

My dd is preparing for the music aptitude test for 11 plus. She is struggling in the Texture and Rhythm sections of the test.

How do I assist her?

Is there something I can do to help her. Her singing teacher focuses more in the singing part rather than the aptitude test part.

Would really appreciate any guidance from more experienced mums.

Thanks.

You can learn the skills needed by undertaking Ear Training. It’s taught and I’m sure there are apps these days.

@Leopardmatches

Thanks. Do you know of any apps that you can suggest?

Urgh! I remember those texture questions! They are difficult! (My DS found them easier on the day than on the practice tests because their audio was better quality). But we found some on YouTube, and bought the practice tests from SE22 Piano School - around £30, I think, and worth it. I asked piano teacher to go through them with DS, which was better than me trying to do it - you could ask DD’s singing teacher?
I also think it helps them train their ears to the differences if you have a piano / keyboard and the child can play 2 3 or 4 notes themselves, just to understand the difference in sound for each.
Good luck!

DS is having specialist aural lessons to support him through G5. His teacher is a piano teacher who also offers this. Maybe ask around if there is someone near you that does this ?

We're prepping for Ashmole in June and downloaded these tests but the texture section is really tricky. Has anyone tried the online tutoring from SE22? Our music teacher does not seem to know much about the tests so any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Hello, my bother and SIL are music teachers and are developing an app to support children with the 11+ music test. My SIL has actually just made a helpful tutorial on texture and rhythm on YouTube. Here's the link:
I hope that helps 😀

It is more than possible to be awarded music aptitude places for schools with absolutely NONE of this tutoring for the MAT.

We went in completely cold not even knowing what was going to be tested and DD came away with offers giving her a selection of schools to pick from.

If they have genuine musical aptitude then these tests will be a doddle for them.
