Hi, does anyone know how many girls applied for 11+ entry this year? Thanks. ☺️

No idea on the answer but currently waiting to hear back from both too so interested in the answer.

LearningJourney · 18/01/2024 06:26

Good luck! Do you or your DD have a preference? It’s a long hard wait …

Very busy interview days for both of these - my daughter said 12 groups of 20 at GHS and that didn’t include GHS prep girls.

Tormead results out but GHS a bit vague about timing for theirs!

LearningJourney · 22/01/2024 16:43

Thanks @Userno1 . That's a lot of girls going for GHS! 😬Think they said 130 places for Year 7 with 40 going to their own Prep. So if your daughter's right it is about 240 girls going for 90 places ( I actually thought it was more so hope she's right!). I'm feeling very anxious and will be glad when the results are finally out. Wish they had given a fixed date. Good luck to your DD!

Don't think that is quite right. There are normally about 60 places for externals.
40 ish from the prep, 60 ish from the exam.

My dd is in year 7 are they have about 105 girls.
Last year there were approx 300 girls sitting for 60 places.

They announced their results by post the last Saturday in January last year. Do that would mean this Saturday.

Good luck!

LearningJourney · 23/01/2024 07:23

Those odds sound more plausible@Firenze12 - thanks! It’s a tough one when all the girls applying are so capable. I’m feeling very anxious. I don’t really understand how the school works out who to take for all the interview, activity observation, exam, report….

Userno1 · 23/01/2024 08:39

Thanks for the info @Firenze12 Hope your DD is enjoying GHS?

Good luck to your DD too @LearningJourney - hopefully we’ll know by the weekend! Glad DD has a place at Tormead, as that seems to be a lovely school and I really liked it but DD currently more keen on GHS for some reason

LearningJourney · 23/01/2024 09:02

Same here, @Userno1 ...to be honest, I'm also hoping for GHS for my DD and she really wants it. I'm trying to stay realistic though...admissions told me on the open day that every girl who applies is pretty much of the standard to earn a place, so that makes it really hard.

OP posts:
Workingtheplans · 23/01/2024 09:14

Same here - did would prefer ghs - based on logistics, and just a feel for the school. But we are being completely realistic - the majority of applicants won’t be offered a place.

Nearly there 😎

LearningJourney · 23/01/2024 12:56

@Workingtheplans ...you've hit the nail on the head: the vast majority of girls don't get in. Honestly, I think DD will be pretty crushed if she does't get a place and I'm not entirely sure what I'll say to make her feel better. However I dress it up, the other schools that she did exams for are very much her second choices and we both know it. I'm feeling a bit defeated by this whole process. Think I'd prefer it was me being put through it not my DD.

OP posts:
Workingtheplans · 23/01/2024 15:46

It’s such an intense process for them. I am relieved that dd has an offer having decided on only doing two applications. I was worried that her confidence would be hit if she didn’t get any offers.

ghs is our preference … but if is down to 300 into 60 then it bit of good fortune and luck will come into play. We just keep let her know the odds so that she knows it a possibility but not a dead cert. also we are making sure her offer that she has is celebrated too.

out of interest what is that makes it her favourite? Is it something specific? Genuinely interested as we are basing ours on a feeling more based on a few visits at the moment…

Firenze12 · 23/01/2024 19:56

Good luck to both of you. Yes she loves it. I've been very impressed by how unpressurized it is. No homework at all in holidays for example and first report has no grades, just effort and participation.
They are very big on doing your best and not comparisons.Lots of sport too.
I also know people with girls at Tormead and they love it. It seems a great school.

LearningJourney · 23/01/2024 20:49

That’s really lovely to hear about both schools, @Firenze12 . Thank you.

@Workingtheplans …interestingly, she really liked the talk from the Head at GHS. I think it was the fastest-paced of the school talks we went too. Quite factual and to the point. She also likes the new drama building and was impressed by the sport facilities, both of which are much better than her current school. I think it’s fair to say the giant ‘school of the decade’ banner at the entrance caught her eye too, even though I deliberately didn’t mention anything about that. Her brothers are both at RGS too and she’s heard from them about things their friends at ghs do and she sort of sees herself there…
Trying to big up the achievement of all offers too!

OP posts:
Workingtheplans · 24/01/2024 09:50

@LearningJourney sounds very similar to us in terms of DDs reaction to the talks - my DD liked the matter of factness. She is a "get on with it" kind of girl. Am assuming that when they actually go to a school - the mechanics of school life will be pretty similar.

verygreengrass · 26/01/2024 17:11

Ghs is out 😱

LearningJourney · 26/01/2024 18:01

That was very unexpected! I thought it was posted. 🤗

OP posts:
Workingtheplans · 26/01/2024 18:02

We got wait listed - fingers crossed

Firenze12 · 26/01/2024 19:05

Hope everyone got good news! It was only posted last year.

Firenze12 · 26/01/2024 19:06

@Workingtheplans hope the waitlist moves if that's what you want x

Workingtheplans · 26/01/2024 19:15

@LearningJourney sounds like it was goodness for your dd well done.

Userno1 · 27/01/2024 11:06

DD got offered a place and is thrilled - it should probably be a no brainer but now decision making required! We’re lucky to have so many great schools, don’t feel like there’s a bad choice. Well done to all and fingers crossed for @Workingtheplans and anyone on a waitlist to get where they want x

HappyMum0301 · 29/01/2024 17:36

Hi ,any idea on how many students roughly must be put on waiting list.

Thank you

Sonora25 · 29/01/2024 20:09

@Userno1 @Firenze12 we will apply for GH next year? Any suggestions/advice?
DD is very academic, likes a couple of sports (swimming/dancing), bi-lingual and plays one instrument (not on high level). She is polite and friendly, but not overly outgoing (struggles to make friends) and tends ro be on the quiet/introvert side. I think an academic environment would suit her very well. Any advice on how to help her prepare would be great. Thanks
