Cooking qualification

My son is due to start A-levels in year 12 in September. He is considering being a chef but his school do not offer any food related qualifications. Does anyone know where is the best place to get qualifications outside School – he’s looking at fine dining type cuisine. He’s completely self-taught.

Stupid question incoming:

Have you looked at Hospitality & Catering at a college instead?

DiveBombingSeagull · 15/01/2024 18:37

DSD2 did a course here

They do a number of options from 'off to Uni' to 'ski chalet host'.

We were impressed with the quality of food / presentation and she felt it was well worth the money.

Assuming he doesn’t want to go to catering college (and tbh if he is able then he would be wise to get some A levels under his belt) then the first stop should be work experience in a kitchen as a part-time job while he is studying. Is this doesn’t put him off completely then he can look at formal training options post 18.

@TeenDivided we have considered this but would like him to get his A levels first should he change his mind in the future.
@ThanksItHasPockets this is exactly what I’ve suggested to him 😀.
@MrsHamlet @DiveBombingSeagull thanks for your suggestions. I’ll take a look at these.
