Music and Art GCSE

DD2 is choosing her GCSE subjects. She is thinking of doing both Music and Art, I'm a little concerned about how much work is involved in both and if doing both is too much.

On the other side I think with both a lot of the work is done in advance of the other more academic exams so this could be a positive.

Can anyone advise?

Music isn't a lot more work if she already plays an instrument or sings well? The performance component and composing component can be got out of the way relatively early if she is organised with her time. Art does seem to take a lot more time however.

My son did Photography to he thought provide respite from his more academic subjects. It felt like it took over our lives, he did get an 8 though amongst his 4s 5s and 6s.

Most people who choose music probably play instruments so often a lot of people do well on the performance. Therefore the most challenging and time consuming part is probably the composition. I remember my DS staying late regularly after school to work on his.

However I think art is probably more time consuming. I would only encourage your DD to do art if she really enjoys it and it comes easily to her.

Music/textiles/art

I don’t have the answer but had similar thoughts to you last year, lots of helpful posts in the link above.

DC is taking music, art and textiles, it’s early days yet and there is a lot of homework. She likes doing the homework for her chosen subjects and resents the others. She doesn’t want a break from the other subjects, she just doesn’t want to do them!
