My son in yr 12 has got this progress report…he wants to study physics at uni…I think the grading is hard in comparison to the score or am I missing something

help! 😵‍💫

Alevel and GAPP?!

Think you need to ask your son if there was any other info.
I.e. what is GAPP, as based on the % it doesn't look like a grade.
If that's all he was given he needs to ask his teachers.

I have never heard of it either and my daughter is in yr 12 - sounds like its something you need to discuss with the school. Did they not send any explanatory notes with the report?

Uurrjb · 14/11/2023 15:51

Hi thanks for your reply
GAPP is grade at present progress…so if continue at this effort this is what you would get at Alevel (I think)

the disparity between a mid A and a mid D looking at the % is what I don’t understand

In which case you can't compare the % and the grade (and you probably can't anyway because of the level of questions and the grade boundaries in each subject).
It may be the fourth entry had really easy questions and loads in the class(es) were getting 90%+

stubiff · 14/11/2023 15:55

If the fourth entry is Physics (or Maths) then worth speaking to the teacher to see where he can improve.

Uurrjb · 14/11/2023 16:16

Thanks!

just to say if anyone is interested if you click on pic the subject is to the left…perhaps there were a lot of kids getting a high percentage and that’s why the grade is low…he has just messaged me and said he’s not getting a D in 2 yrs time 😵‍💫🤞😆

hmm yes I agree with others OP; it seems likely that there was some variation in terms of the difficulty of the tests. Which when you think about it, is pretty probable. Teachers don't standardise test levels across subjects.

The one that I fine odd is FM - how is he looking at a higher grade in that than in maths? Even if B3 means almost an A (as opposed to just a B) then he is still some levels ahead in FM which seems surprising.

Anyway the place to start is school and his physics teachers - where is he dropping marks? What can he do? This is especially a concern if he is hoping to take physics at uni. Good to know now tho.

Uurrjb · 14/11/2023 17:02

That’s why I’m like…😵‍💫

he says his physics teacher doesn’t like him….🤷🏻‍♀️

so half of me is wow great test scores….but then the grades 👀

The 1/2/3 is top middle bottom banding (apparently)

I don’t know whether to congratulate him or ground him (I’m joking )

Oh so 1 is top? So he is a low B in maths but a mid A in FM? Very strange surely?

His physics teacher doesn’t hate him. He will get better marks in physics if he addresses any issues.
