11 plus support thread for exams 2024

ElvenDreamer · 11/10/2023 08:55

Hi all,
Anyone fancy joining me for for an 11 plus support thread for those yr 5s who are probably just starting a bit of prep now ready to sit exams in September 2024?

State grammar is the angle I'm personally coming from but all welcome no matter if you're applying to private selective, state aptitude tests etc.

This will be my 3rd and final time of going through this and I've found support threads here really useful the previous times.

Emails are meant to go out at 4 today with Kent Test results. I've heard of people getting them earlier in previous years though, and they have an apology on their website in case "the recipient's email system" causes a delay in the message arriving 🙄 You can log on to the registration/application website to see your results from 5pm.

troppibambini6 · 17/10/2024 14:18

Good luck to all the Kent people!

ChemistryMan · 17/10/2024 14:52

We’re still waiting to hear from the Blue Coat in Liverpool. Such long and painful torture.

yoshiblue · 17/10/2024 16:17

@ChemistryMan when are you expecting to hear?

vman1979 · 17/10/2024 16:46

Hi all,

DD has received a score of 364 in her recent 11+ CSSE exams. Given the catchment rule change for Colchester High School for girls, would anyone know if this score is enough for her to get in. We are out of catchment btw. Thanks

Supposedly on 25th.

Her score is way higher than any other school's out of catchment, It should be same with CCHSG. you are safe in my opinion

Waiting to hear - supposedly tomorrow!

SpinningOutWaitingForYa · 18/10/2024 05:24

DC has scored 188. I'm proud of them but also sad for them. There are going to be a lot of children at school who have passed and will be going.

Any tips of how to deliver the news would be much appreciated.

Nice to see some more positive results coming through, and fingers crossed for those of you nail biting through to March!
Having initially taken his news well, DS was utterly dejected yesterday, I think it hasn't really sunk in before. He's trying to put a brave face on it though and the only other child at his school that sat had the same experience sadly so they were able to have a little chat and cheer each other up.

I meanwhile am hatching some new thoughts, the school that we now want now that superselective grammar is off the radar has a sort of 'grammar stream' as part of its make up, which leads me to believe I could potentially have basis for appeal if we don't get it. It's the only school near us which does this and obviously DS has passed 11+. It also has very active music and dance departments, much more so than catchment school, and DS has taken weekly dance lessons since tiny and has been learning his instrument a few years now. Surmising that it might be possible to use all these things to say why he needs this school more than it would be a detriment to them etc....hopefully we'll just get it on offers day but trying to plan ahead!

Which school OP? Perhaps I can advise from the area

I'm sorry your dd hasn't got the score you wanted. You don't say for which area, but given many pass scores are in the 200s, she may have been a bit off passing.

Primarily I would be 'bigging up' that she will be better suited at a non selective school in higher sets, rather than in a pressured grammar school where there are some very high achieving children. Less pressure, less homework and more fun most likely!

There are pros and cons to every school. If my son doesn't pass, the non selective school is nearby, will be going with more school peers and the SEN support for him would be better too! And the above, I've told him he'll have a more relaxing life at the non selective!

slaybell · 18/10/2024 09:44

That's great advice @yoshiblue. Still working out how to work this with DD if she is unsuccessful so that's a really good approach to take!

It is a cliché but I think it’s important to reiterate that what matters is putting in the work and doing one’s best, regardless of success. This goes for all kids, whether they pass or not. Kids’ self-worth is very important. They need to know that self-worth, and their parents’ pride, does not depend on results. 11+ is just a moment in a long journey (GCSE, A-levels, University exams) and there will be bumps along the way. Making a big fuss about passing (or not passing) the 11+, will not help their resilience.

LaBee · 18/10/2024 12:16

Anyone know when Kendrick is likely to release the results?

MrsDexter · 18/10/2024 12:42

Thank you. Given all the private school VAT issues and the new catchment ruling for Colchester for girls we weren’t sure if our DD had done enough.

Really well said.

This shall be the message being reminded from time to time throughout the preparation, especially towards the end.

I never wanted ds think of me that we are making him to practice to pass for selective. People say he is bright.

He should be doing the practice anyway to catchup with people who get tutored everyday from the age 1 or 2 😮 in our non-grammar area.

troppibambini6 · 21/10/2024 10:11

Another day of waiting for us 😩

@troppibambini6 so bloody painful! I really don't know why they need to drag it out so much 😂
