11 plus support thread for exams 2024

ElvenDreamer · 11/10/2023 08:55

Hi all,
Anyone fancy joining me for for an 11 plus support thread for those yr 5s who are probably just starting a bit of prep now ready to sit exams in September 2024?

State grammar is the angle I'm personally coming from but all welcome no matter if you're applying to private selective, state aptitude tests etc.

This will be my 3rd and final time of going through this and I've found support threads here really useful the previous times.

@MySparklyGoldHelper congratulations to you, your DS and everyone regardless of the outcome, as we all know how much effort these processes are.
I drafted something today and think it may be of help if your DS is aiming for KEGs IC/OOC. Will send via PM.

MySparklyGoldHelper · 15/10/2024 18:40

Thank you PencilVania , much appreciated. Congratulations to you and your DS too ! As you say they all and we all deserve a cheer for getting this far , regardless of the results and offers or none. So we'll done to All !

MySparklyGoldHelper · 15/10/2024 18:51

@NoWayRose KEGS or CRGS? Thanks

slaybell · 16/10/2024 08:15

Trafford Parents: Quick question, how would you know if your DC is in the top 20? My DD won't be anywhere near this but just curious. I know you get a separate score for each school, do they also tell you if you are in the top 20? How would you know you are guaranteed one of those places if they don't?

Good question, no idea

@slaybell I know Urmston grammar put details on their website including the initial top 20 score, which will then fall depending on who applies for what schools. Presume it's the same for the others.

Ah that's good to know.

Presumably they post this before the CAF needs to be submitted?

yoshiblue · 16/10/2024 09:37

From memory it was on results day. They also have information on their website that show what the final top 20 and out of catchment score went to on National Offer Day. Similar information is on the Trafford Council website too.

In short, I think you need to be getting at least 260+ for out of catchment scores for Alti/Sale, its based on distance for Urmston/Stretford.

mahesht · 16/10/2024 10:08

my son got 214, is this good score for Haberdashers' Adams Grammar School, Telford?

ElvenDreamer · 14/10/2024 19:55

Aw, thanks for your kind words everyone, it's really helped me through the evening. Sadly our catchment school is quite rubbish but I'm going to chance my arm on the one we are only just ooc for and live in hope for a place as that one is really quite good and I think it would suit my DS. If we do get catchment I'm already having a think how I can supplement my sons education to make sure he gets the best out of life no matter what!

@ElvenDreamer What can I say, you have been driving force for few by being here and that can be witnessed from the messages above. during the journey DS only said He wants to have wonderful childhood and not this. State school is the only place he can have it, but It is not safe for his own mental well being based on where we live. DH assume people come to selective schools for study and so they dont bully as much. I cant buy it.

I wish such a wonderful childhood for your DS with the backing of great family. Thank you for creating this community.

BeJollyNewt · 16/10/2024 12:42

Happy for all whose DS got into selective and wish the DS who dint get through a fabulous childhood.

ElvenDreamer · 16/10/2024 12:56

Nice to see some more positive results coming through, and fingers crossed for those of you nail biting through to March!
Having initially taken his news well, DS was utterly dejected yesterday, I think it hasn't really sunk in before. He's trying to put a brave face on it though and the only other child at his school that sat had the same experience sadly so they were able to have a little chat and cheer each other up.

I meanwhile am hatching some new thoughts, the school that we now want now that superselective grammar is off the radar has a sort of 'grammar stream' as part of its make up, which leads me to believe I could potentially have basis for appeal if we don't get it. It's the only school near us which does this and obviously DS has passed 11+. It also has very active music and dance departments, much more so than catchment school, and DS has taken weekly dance lessons since tiny and has been learning his instrument a few years now. Surmising that it might be possible to use all these things to say why he needs this school more than it would be a detriment to them etc....hopefully we'll just get it on offers day but trying to plan ahead!

Hi, have any of you used /using exampaperplus products? can I send pm to you?

SquashSqueezee · 16/10/2024 13:45

@BeJollyNewt I relied heavily on EPP materials for mock exam practice (bundles of papers and video solutions) at home. Didn’t use any of their tuition products.

Gilmoregirly · 16/10/2024 15:13

That sounds like a very good plan @ElvenDreamer . My DD got good results for both CCHS and CSSE. Our first choice is CCHS for which she got category 1. Anyone’s DD currently in CCHS? Please would you let me know if they are happy there?

LetItGoToRuin · 16/10/2024 15:49

@ElvenDreamer I have been lurking on here in case I can be useful to anyone (still waiting, haha!)

I just wanted to say that it sounds like you've got the makings of a really positive plan for your DS. I've no experience with appeals, but I've read many threads on here, and it sounds like your reasons for this school being highly suitable for your DS (academic suitability, drama, music) sound like just the type of evidence that is recommended for appeals.

Fingers crossed he will get a place and you won't need to go to appeal, but it is great to have a strong plan in place. All the best!

Sadly it's a brutal system, with the majority unfortunately not getting a place. I was trying to explain to my DC yesterday that's it more of a measure of preparedness (i.e. tuition) rather than ability. The sad state of some / most non-grammar state schools means that parents go to extreme lengths to try and get a place at grammar, creating almost unfair system.

ElvenDreamer · 16/10/2024 16:55

@Gilmoregirly my DD is at CCHS currently so feel free to ask any questions you like, either on here or DM.

Editing having read your post again to say she is very very happy there. Currently in year 9, not once have I regretted our decision. We are OOC too so longish journeys but it's definitely been worth it.

Does anyone else think we might get Ambrose/Loreto results today?

troppibambini6 · 17/10/2024 10:41

@Traffordmum81 I'm hoping so, everything crossed!

yoshiblue · 17/10/2024 10:58

It's a bloody painful wait, that's for sure!

troppibambini6 · 17/10/2024 11:23

@yoshiblue I've come to the Trafford centre to try and distract myself 😆

troppibambini6 · 17/10/2024 11:35

FFS my friend just called Ambrose and was told the emails will be sent on Monday. I'm so bloody over this now.

yoshiblue · 17/10/2024 11:40

@troppibambini6 thanks for sharing, I can stop checking my emails now!

RandomUsernameHere · 17/10/2024 13:13
