Rugby private school

DS is in year 7 at an independent selective school.
He hates rugby but it’s very rugby focussed.
What do other schools do? I’d be happy enough with him playing tag but not happy for him to play contact/ tackling/ scrums etc.
I feel it should be an opt in/ opt out for contact via a consent form personally then they can group accordingly in lessons.

You opted in to a rugby-focussed school...

This is one of the things you have to consider when you join a school?

In most senior schools the ability to choose sports increases as they go up the school -perhaps he just has to grin and bear it for a year or 2 and then he'll be blae to choose hockey/athletics/whatever instead?

You joined a rugby focused school, are paying for it, and now complain about the rugby? You didn't think to check this before enrolling? If there's anything I know about these sorts of schools is the live breathe sports.
