Hi all
We had a no for stage 1 for Sutton Grammar schools today and just interested for those whose sons got in previous years or have made it to the next stage this time. Did you do tutoring? And if so how much? Just interested more as we didnt and have another grammar school test in a couple of weeks and wondering if anyone had any good resources my son could practice on?

For all of these schools understanding the content which for maths often includes the whole of year six and for English requires a very good and extensive vocabulary is important as are speed and accuracy. I would say most children sitting Sutton and Kingston grammar exams have had tutoring/preparation either with a tutor or at home with parents. I would focus at this stage on speed and accuracy as well as exam technique. Knowing how to fill in the boxes, understanding what marks are awarded for and how to use the clock to help manage your pace. There are lots of excellent state school in this area so hopefully if your son does not make it through you can find a good school that will suit him and his interests.

Have you been doing practice papers with him? I would suggest you should have been doing those for the past few months at the very least. I don’t know of anyone who has passed the 11+ plus without doing practice papers and/or tutoring. The exams require very specifics skills that kids won’t be learning at school.

You sounds woefully underprepared OP. Presumably al lot of your sons friends are also sitting the 11+ - wouldn’t you/he have been aware of all of the preparation that they were doing?
