Finding an English GCSE tutor

My child needs to retake his English Language GCSE (Edexcel). We're in the Northants area. How do I find a good tutor? Any recommendations?

Hi, I'm a tutor and most people find me through recommendations from friends/family/acquaintances, Googling or Facebook groups. You can try the major advertising platforms but be aware that many will seem more expensive because of the commission and VAT added. The tutor will not be getting that fee.

We've just found a tutor by asking for recommendations on our local community facebook page.

Thank you both. That is indeed the route I've taken. Waiting to get confirmation for a local recommended face to face tutor.

Don’t be put off by an online tutor. My DD got a grade 3 in her year 10 mock. Started online tutor in sept of year 11 and she came out with a 6. He was amazing! He was a current secondary English teacher who also marked English exam papers so knew exactly what they were looking for!

Hi there. Would it be possible for you to let me know the contact details for this tutor please?

WalterHWhite · 23/08/2024 07:38

I can give you details of an online tutor if you’d like them. I have recommended her before on mumsnet and it was really successful.

I used Tutor Hunt. You can look at what tutor puts about themselves. TH checks all qualifications. Some are currently teaching English at a school some are retired English teachers.

Hi,

If it's not too much bother, could I have the details of the tutor messaged to me as well?

Thanks a lot. Recommendations are very helpful I find.

WalterHWhite · 05/10/2024 11:35

Yes of course @Fluttermum. I don’t know if it’s any use to you but she also tutors French and German. Will pm you now.

I'd second this. Also don't be put off using graduates / medical students, who charge a little less (£20-30 p/h). Similar situation, my nephew used a tutor (medical student), got an 8, while 4-6 in all other subjects he wasn't struggling in.
