Advice needed - school refusal

DS Y11 has come home from first day back at school and declared he’s never going back.

He is autistic, has an EHCP and attends a special school. He’s never been happy at school (attendance last year was about 75%) but a change to his timetable and taxi driver seem to have tipped him over the edge

His school is a good school but I’m not sure it’s actually the right school for him. I don’t know how I can help him and where to go from here

Sounds like you need a review of the EHCP with the aim of amending it to better meet DS’s needs. There should be a review of DS’s EHCP held this term (or at a push very early next term) anyway, but you can request an early review if the phase transfer review won’t be until late in the term. What support is DS currently receiving? Do you know a placement that would better suit DS?

Is it change itself that DS is struggling with or is there something specific about the new timetable and taxi driver he finds difficult?

You need to send this to the school really. They need to work with him to get him used to this transition. If that doesn't work you need an annual review.
