For a child in year 7 in a selective school is 6B a particularly good mark for a piece of written work in English?

Bear in mind that the national average in year 6 is 4b and would expect about two thirds of a level up from that by end of year 7- yes 6b v. good. (THink 6b is about average for year 9)

But one might expect selective school pupils in year 7 to be working at this level anyway perhaps.

Yes it is, although if course it depends on their target. I have no one in my year group with a level 6 target, level 5a is the highest although I have the top end of my top set working at level 6 and I am very happy with them.

Bother. Her teacher wrote a funny little note on her work saying it was really good and it would be a good weekend to ask her parents for a present!

Forgot to say - thank you both!

I believe that level 6 is what they are looking for in the Y9 SATs. So it is excellent in Y7. Better make that an expensive present .
