Is English lit a core subject ?

Sorry if this a daft question but ds needs 5 GCSE’s at grade 4 or above. He has 6 in maths, 5 in chemistry, biology, physics and 4 in English lit. He only got a 3 in English lang ( 1 mark off a 4). Is English lit a core subject? We have a enrolment meeting tomorrow but really want to know now.

Yes it is.

It is, and criteria of five grade 9-4 should include non-core subjects too.

At my school we would still expect him to re-take the English Language alongside whatever else he was doing. He isn’t required to do it by the government, but lots of apprenticeship schemes and higher education providers will ask for a 4 in Language specifically. If I were you, I would request he join a re-take class for the English too. Some places automatically put everyone without Language in for a re-take, others may not, but getting that 4 in Language will give him more choices later. Good luck tomorrow!

Yes, a pass in English Lit is recognised as reaching the qualification requirements.

Should count as one unless the course/job specifies otherwise. He could resit it if needs be.

If only 1 mark off 4 request a remark via school. Nothing to lose?

If you mean will English Lit count towards 5 GCSEs at 4 or above, it should count. If they specify Maths and English, English does usually mean English Language, but there should be options at this level to retake. You can investigate whether he can start a college course and sign up for a resit, and also get advice from school about the various options for a review of marking, if he's already so close to the grade boundary.
