@MrsHamlet how do you ask for the scripts exactly?

VioletVeeVee · 24/08/2023 17:39

MrsHamlet · 24/08/2023 17:33

You have to ask the exam officer or the teacher. It's a known issue with the English language data (because there are too many pieces for SIMS to cope with!)

Thank you. I’ve sent an email asking the question.

He’s still going to college and will resit but I’d like to know how close to a pass he was, this might give him a little more encouragement!

@MrsHamlet how do you ask for the scripts exactly?

Email the exams office and ask for "priority access to scripts for" and then the ones you want. It'll probably need to come from the candidate.

Rowgtfc72 · 24/08/2023 17:42

@LostFrog same here.
Dd was predicted an 8/9 for music.
Highest score in the school for practical.
Got the highest score in gcses this year. A 5.
Most kids got 2s and 3s and were gutted.
Dd said head of music was spitting mad. Don't know if they're appealing but I may contact the school and ask.

MrsBeetlejuice · 24/08/2023 17:42

@MrsHamlet thank you. Can this also be done for drama, as most of it is practical. I'm sure I sound completely clueless!

MrsBeetlejuice · 24/08/2023 17:43

@MrsHamlet and that's not the same as requesting a marking review?

samsswampy · 24/08/2023 17:43

@MrsHamlet I have emailed the Head of English but not sure if she’ll reply. DD got 3 in maths, Science and history too but they were expected, she thought she’d passed English

Going against the grain here with AQA English - DS predicted a 6 & 7 and got 2 8's - he's in shock! Marking does seem to be all over the place.

Same for my ds!
Predicted 4s for both and got a 7 in Eng Lang and 5 in Lit. Totally shocked!

Duckingella · 24/08/2023 17:45

ShovellyJoe · 24/08/2023 14:06

Lit grades are all over the place here.

It's dd's best subject, never got below a 9 in it and is really talented, felt confident and pleased and came out with a 7. Her teacher is baffled. 9 in Lang as expected.

My DD was 2 marks off a grade 9 in Lit;she's fuming.

MoFoFlo · 24/08/2023 17:46

DDs school have emailed offering to pay for a remark on her English Language as she was 2 marks off a grade 4. It would be a big relief if she doesn’t have to resit in college.

MrsHamlet · 24/08/2023 17:48

@MrsBeetlejuice Not for the NEA bits.
And you don't sound useless. It sounds like your school haven't told you what you need to know.

MrsHamlet · 24/08/2023 17:49

@MrsBeetlejuice requesting the scripts is the step before deciding if it's worth asking for a review. There's no point on spending loads if they're unlikely to move - and most don't.

Seems like the whole top set for Eng Lit at DS's school performed below expectations. Most of have dropped a grade from expected. DS went from a 7/8 to a 5. They are a bit baffled and pissed off. Not sure why they've all performed poorly (relatively speaking).

I agree with you! Even in my Dd school is the same the top sets got 6/5. My dd got 9, 8s in other subjects but got a 6 in English literature

LaurelGrove · 24/08/2023 17:55

DD got 9s in Eng Lit and Lang after being a moderately ok performer in both throughout her life. And on her better subjects - Chemistry, Maths - where she had predicted 9s, she's got 7s. It seems to be a bit chaotic, to say the least.

Same here, Ds did worse than predicted in most subjects, mainly 5s, but then got a 9 in AQA English Lit 🤔

sumbusaking · 24/08/2023 18:00

Really interested reading all the aqa English stuff. DS got 6s in both Eng lang and Lit after predicted 7/8s. He's surprised but as otherwise v happy with some very nice 8s results and going to a great 6th form with his A- level choices, he has accepted it even though surprised as felt his performance were solid 7/8s in the 2 English subjects.

My thoughts having multiple years ago got As in Eng lang and Lit was that as I had felt uneasy with how he was relying on the well known video tutors and I kept advising him to trust his own insights that I can't help having a sneaky feeling that maybe the English examiners are giving 5/6 type marks to the students who think they're doing the right thing by regurgitating Mr Bruff??

naughty40me · 24/08/2023 18:01

My DS got fab results! I am so very proud of him.

He's not had it easy. We had a section 21 eviction and got rehomed in October. The house was in a state and bare floors etc.

I went through a breakdown during the whole process with crisis team doing daily visits.

He's coped with all that upheaval on top of covid, and he's still come out strong.

7-6 for Combined Science
6 English and English Lit
6 Maths
6 History (which he was desperate for!).

Rest all 6, too, with one 5 for Computer Science and M2 for his BTEC.

We're all enrolled at College and he met all requirements so was all straight forward.

A few friends have got 3 in English and going for remarks. I think there is a sense overall that grading has been tough.

Can't wait for bed time I'm knackered. 😴

Maybe they couldn't be arsed with marking this year and pulled names out of a hat instead. 😂

Well done to your DD though!

DS got a print out obviously put together by his school with all his grades on but not his actual marks. When I got my GCSEs many moons ago we got slips from the exam boards themselves. Do they not do them anymore? DSs school are notoriously bad at handling information and I would rather see the grades in the flesh from the exam board if you see what I mean.

No, they don't. All the results are downloaded directly from the boards and imported directly into the MIS.

The 'flesh' is made up of thousands of 1s and 0s travelling through cables at the speed of light (and then at the speed of the local internet cabling).

WaitingforThursday · 24/08/2023 18:06

Another AQA English lit disappointment here. 9 in mock, predicted 8/9 all the way through, yr 11 school prize for English, got a 5.

Is that a Tik Tok thing? DS mentioned Tik Tok revision videos a couple of times. Hmmm 🤔

Maybe something to warn them against for A levels. Get off Tik Tok. Read a book. 😄

Ah I thought things may have moved on. Although I have seen some kids with a different bit of paper for each exam board on their headed paper, whereas DS just has a list of subjects and grades on the schools headed paper.

Hopefully that will be good enough for the company he is doing his apprenticeship with.

Examiners don't award grades, but the markschemes at the top end are about insight, criticality and judiciousness.

No, it's on YouTube. I felt really uneasy about the videos and neither of us could convince ds to have more confidence in himself.

There's a lot of dubious nonsense out there!
MrBruff is good but not for the top band of the markschemes
