Going against the grain here with AQA English - DS predicted a 6 & 7 and got 2 8's - he's in shock! Marking does seem to be all over the place.

Interesting to read about the unexpected English results. DS is 1 mark off passing English Lit and I am wondering about a remark. His teacher just said it’s worth a shot but hasn’t offered to review the script or anything. He doesn’t need it to do the course he wants to do but it would be another GCSE.

By passing do you mean 1 mark off a grade 4? I would definitely do it in that situation and the school should be pursuing it really.

I spoke to our school earlier and they are really busy reviewing all the 3s that are borderline 4s because upgrading those will help the school pass statistics too.

Dancerr · 24/08/2023 17:20

Really happy here.
I don't know if anyone remembers me saying my son completely missed the unseen poetry in the 2nd Eng Lit paper? Somehow he managed to still get a 5!! Totally shocked.
Well done to everyone

MrsBeetlejuice · 24/08/2023 17:21

@Postapocalypticcowgirl we are trying to find somewhere, but there doesn't seem anywhere suitable. DD has mild SN and it's quite complicated.

This is the thing, I haven't spoken to the school. I have tried calling and emailing various teachers/departments, but have heard nothing. There was no way we were sticking around to speak to staff this morning, as DD was in bits, begging me to drive off. I think hearing other students running out squealing they'd recieved 9s in everything was the extra sting in the tail tbh.

It won't annoy the teachers, they should/will be happy that she wants to know.

We have to pay an admin fee of £5 per paper (not per subject) to see the scripts, so depends how much we want to spend on being curious!

AKAsomeoneelse · 24/08/2023 17:23

@OvaHere yes, he got a 3 for English Lit. He got 56 marks and grade boundary for a 4 is 57.

VioletVeeVee · 24/08/2023 17:24

So, after many different responses regarding my question about the confusing combined science trilogy marks, it seems that DS just missed out.

A 43 mark doesn’t mean a grade 4 and 3, it’s one mark, so he sits at 3.5 for combined science, which considering he missed most of Y10 & 11, to me, isn’t a fail, although a 3.5 is a fail.

Grade boundaries last year and the year before would have meant his 215 mark would have been pass but this years grade boundary was 230.

madameMscastle · 24/08/2023 17:25

I would like to know how to request the exam paper.
DS was 10 marks off in maths, hes retaking it so it will be interesting to see what happened. so he can improve.

Go for it. You can lose marks in remark but he wouldn't lose enough to drop to a 2 so I really think it's worth it.

We're curious enough to pay a tenner for 2 papers! (Assuming DD's school charges something similar.)

VioletVeeVee · 24/08/2023 17:27

DS got a grade 3 for Eng language but the marks haven’t been entered into his certificate, so I can’t find out how far off a 4 he was!

Is there anyway of finding out?

AKAsomeoneelse · 24/08/2023 17:27

@OvaHere - thanks. I think we will.

I really hope someone gets back to you tomorrow, then, and is able to help.

I think Mrs Hamlet said to just ask either the teacher or the exam officer.

Thank youFlowers

Will it piss off the teachers if it isn't actually necessary but just curiosity?

No :)

Dancerr · 24/08/2023 17:32

Did anyone not do as well as expected in the edexcel Maths?

Funnily enough we were worried my son might not even pass Eng Lang, predicted a 4 but managed to get a 7 however with Maths it was the other way around!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/08/2023 17:32

Well done to all of them!

DS year 10 has got all A*s and 1 A in a science practical so he’s chuffed to bits with that. Lots of good grades bagged towards the final grades after next summer’s exams.

samsswampy · 24/08/2023 17:32

My DD was so disappointed with English, she was predicted 8 and 9 and only got 3 for both of them, how can the school have got it so wrong?

Contact the exams officer. Ask for priority access to the scripts.

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/08/2023 17:33

Not great news here, I feel sad for dd.

She got 6s in English Lit, English Lang, Maths and Double Science. 5s in History and RS. 4 in Spanish and she failed Classics with a 3.

These results look good on paper but unfortunately her school require 46 points from the 8 best GCSEs for Sixth Form - she got 44. School have told her to appeal - there is a panel meeting next week - and also to apply for a re-mark for English Lang (one mark off a 7).

She's a very bright girl, sailed through primary school and 11+ but it fell apart a bit after that with an autism diagnosis and mental health problems in Years 10 and 11. She only had 50% attendance in the last 2 years so her results are good in spite of this.

You have to ask the exam officer or the teacher. It's a known issue with the English language data (because there are too many pieces for SIMS to cope with!)

Ask for the scripts. That's odd.

My Ds passed maths English and Science not the subjects he was planning for A level . We have been working on an alternative plan . I am greatful if he passed 3 subjects it’s those

I’m sure there’s disappointment, but you’re right that it’s much better to not have maths and English resits hanging over his head! I hope he finds an alternative path that suits him
