Hi all

A new thread for those needing support (or just wanting to chat or rant!) with teens heading into their GCSE years.

@minisnowballs - oh wow! I am so not ready for that! Dd still mostly just finds boys annoying. I hope she has a lovely time. And actual seats too - he must be smitten!

Oh crikey boyfriends!! Hope she has a fab time @minisnowballs

DataColour · 18/08/2024 09:21

@minisnowballs hope your DD has a great time! What a sophisticated date!

@icanbewhatiwant sorry that sounds hard. At least he's had a couple of days of socialising now. Not sure my DS has met up with any friends, I think he did go out for a bit once whilst I was at work, but only briefly. We keep asking him to arrange something but he keeps saying his friends are away on holiday. He's a bit lazy about meeting up with friends so he's not trying that hard. He does see friends when he does sports clubs which he has continued to do during the summer. Also cricket matches are pretty sociable and he does one about once a week. He's ok about going on holiday with us still, think he enjoys the eating out part of it so will still come out for that! He's just gone away with DH and DD to camp for a night.

minisnowballs · 19/08/2024 09:03

@QueenMabby @DataColour @NotDonna thanks! I think it went really well - she's v bouncy this am - but they're both worried about a long-distance relationship given she's a boarder, and they're both v busy kids.

I reckon long-distance is absolutely perfect at this stage in GCSEs to be honest. Loving the thought of them both at the Proms geeking out about the music after their pizza dinner - would have loved to be a fly on the wall.

Anyway, she's already up and out to orchestra - Rachmaninov's second symphony should take her mind off love's young dream.

Results day for dd here for her early GCSE. We went into school to get her envelope as good practice for next year.

She was thrilled to get a 9. 195/200 as a raw score so only 5 marks dropped over 3 papers. 2 actually as she got 100% on one of the papers! A very happy girl.

Hope all others with early results got what they wanted.

Wow that's amazing! Well done to your DD @QueenMabby Is she planning anything to celebrate?

minisnowballs · 22/08/2024 10:51

Amazing news @QueenMabby ! Hope she’s celebrating today!

QueenMabby · 22/08/2024 11:27

Thanks both. We had a celebratory breakfast out and she's meeting up with some dance friends this afternoon (different schools).

Sorry for second post but when are everyone's dcs back to school? It's the 4th here which seems very close! I'll start a year 11 thread shall I??

OP posts:
DataColour · 22/08/2024 11:54

Yes it's the 4th for us too.

DS2 starts year 11 on Thursday 5 September - school year starts with inset days and a day when they just have newbies (year 7) in, then year 11 and year 7. The other 3 years come back on Friday. That school doesn't have 6th form so DS1 is is doing his A levels (going into year 13) on the posh side of our borough a few miles away! He starts on 2 September but he also finished slightly earlier in July.

I think it's a good idea to start a new thread for year 11, and hopefully add a link here. Last year's year 12 thread is completely full, so I've started a year 13 thread with a deliberately similar title, as there's no space to go back to the last thread to link it.

New thread for year 11 is here:

Wow-well done to your DD @QueenMabby -what a fantastic result.
DS got an 8 in RS which he is flabbergasted by-got a 3 in his mock! Most of his pals seemed to have done well so the strategy to get it done early seems to have paid off as they have to take it and not sure many would give it much focus if they did it with all the others.

QueenMabby · 22/08/2024 15:10

That's great news for your ds @SB1971. What a fantastic result!

Huge congrats to your DS @SB1971 and your DD @QueenMabby see you over on yr11. Oooh crikey…

DataColour · 30/08/2024 11:05

@SB1971 well done on your son's RE result! That's great and glad it's out of the way!

Well done icanbe for ds Head Boy application. Supersur that seems so unfair.

I'm starting to worry /wonder if ds2 actually knows how to revise. He says he does, but admits has never needed to as yet.

He only has small topic tests, eg the exams/tests coming up are only on:

Bio: B1, B2, B3, B4
Chem: C1, C2, C4, C7, C9
Phys: P1, P2, P6

I'm thinking I'm going to have to force him. I've downloaded the maths syllabus into excel, but will he tick it off? Or prefer an app. I've got all the themes and quotes for Macbeth, but will he use that? He has no drive, am a bit concerned.

@Oblomov24 - not sure if you're still around, but I've been looking through this last years thread about year 10s for ideas/inspiration. My son is in year 10 currently. I liked your idea of putting the syllabus into Excel. I've had a go at that myself, but the spec is in pdf format. I was just wondering if you used a certain method?
