My son is going is moving up to secondary school in September and I have absolutely no clue what style of shoes the boys wear. Can anyone give me an idea? Thanks!

Usually Wallbys and kickers are seen as acceptable socially.

If he's got a long walk plain black hush puppies are great. Not cheap but they are soft so they don't rub and last for ages. My son just left school at 16 and I think he only had two pairs of hush puppies throughout the whole time!

Check what the school allows. If they allow trainers, or kickers or boots, you will probably find most wear those.

Otherwise, plain black lace up shoes (like the ones a PP has posted) are absolutely fine. To be honest most things that satisfy the uniform rules will be absolutely fine. Year 7 boys don't really care about each other's shoes. I'd worry more about bags :)

My school does allow black trainers. My eldest wears vans and youngest, adidas.

You need to check the uniform guidelines.

BoohooWoohoo · 15/07/2023 10:53

Do the uniform rules give any clue?
My ds school doesn't allow trainers which would be his first choice. He had lace up shoes from John Lewis school shoe section.

I thought stick-ups would probably be a definite no 😂 School rules for shoes says black with leather (or leather imitation) soles. No boots, plimsolls, trainers or trainer-style shoes. It also says no logos.

I'm hoping the bag we've got is ok . We just got a black Nike backpack style one. I feel like Nike is popular with the kids, well I'm assuming, I have no idea. When I was my son's age, I was telling my mum what I had to have, but my son couldn't care less as long as he's comfortable, so he's not been much help on what's in and what's not.

He'll probably get more indoctrinated in what is "in" when he gets to secondary school. My DC didn't care too much in Year 7, but by Year 8 they had a more specific list of requirements. So I think a good rule of thumb is to use something you already have rather than spending money, or if you don't have anything suitable go for plain and innocuous. A black Nike backpack sounds perfect.

I don’t think children care as much these days, well mine certainly don’t seem to. I’m not sure it’s such a big deal as it was when I was younger. And what a good thing that is.

Clutterbugsmum · 15/07/2023 12:08

Mine have always had Kickers as they are hardwearing.

Backpack I've gone for fully waterproof like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vodlbov-Backpack-Resistant-Business-Lightweight-%E9%BB%92/dp/B0821J8YG6/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2Y5K54Z3DH4Y1&keywords=waterproof+laptop+backpack&qid=1689418648&sprefix=waterproof+la%2Caps%2C76&sr=8-4 rather then a named brand as the amount of time the kids bags get wet and books get ruined because most backpacks are just showerproof.

IfItAintBrokeBreakIt · 15/07/2023 12:12

My son used to wear Nike Air Force 1 until the school banned trainers. Then he wore kickers.

powa · 15/07/2023 15:48

Agree it seems to be less of a thing now. Mine have always had Clarks black lace ups. Same rucksack for 4 years (replacing this year, but only because it's finally falling apart!). No issues at all.

I really hope this is true. It was awful when I was at school!

Any black back pack seems fine at ours. They also say any black shoes Inc plain trainers. But other schools are stricter on it
