School bags

Obviously subjective but for a bog standard comp (going to a different one to school friends) and won’t need to catch a bus. - what are girls using as school bags. Vans rucksack type thing or a tote style handbag? Any suggestions on brands? She’s my eldest.

Totes were banned by DD's head 5 years ago and when I saw the mountain of stuff DD had to bring in, rightly so. A backpack is better for the still growing spine as well.

She got a Jansport last year and that brand is the only one which survived intact more than 2 terms. Really roomy and quality wise better than Hype.

Most Y7 seem to start here with colourful Hype or similar brands but by Y8 they all move to dark colours.

Jansport or Eastpak backpack for carrying all books and items comfortably.
Check out websites since there could be online sales offer now.

Trends can vary school to school, let alone area to area. Do you have something plain and non-descript that she could use for a few weeks, then let her decide what she wants at that point?

Black backpack - certain brands per school

Nike backpack will be fine

If you're looking for durability, my personal Jansport is 20+ years old and going strong. DS1's new Jansport looks just as good quality (and has a waterproof compartment for a laptop).

It's unremarkable in style, but they last and DS is only allowed a plain black bag anyway.

Does she have a plain or sporty one like Nike or Adidas to use at the start? I would allow her to choose a bag after she gets an idea of what the others are carrying. Trends differ amongst schools and friendship groups and you don't want to be buying twice if possible.

DS' school is split with girls who use handbags and girls who wear backpacks. A lot of fjallraven kanken and vans backpacks.

Jansport or Karrimor in my DDs school.

Current school bag is a plain laptop style rucksack she chose a few years ago but it’s a bit “old commuter”! Thanks for suggestions, I will see what Jansport ones are available. I suppose my son could always use it if she goes for a tote bag once term starts.

She has a medium Le pliage in a bright colour bought when she was small in a sale and she’s petitioning for a large one of those but it seems a lot for a school bag even on Vinted. Mind you the one that’s too small has done excellent work for 6 years as a ballet bag.
