Latin - starting a year later

Hello, my daughter will be joining a new school from Year 8 and will be learning Latin and Classical Civilisation. The rest of the year will have started in year 7. Does anyone have any recommendations for books/resources that might be useful as an introduction to the subject, that she could start to read now? Many thanks!

Oak Academy have good free Latin lessons online, would be easy to catch up in a few days during the summer holidays.

DD started with the Cambridge Latin Course.

Cambridge Latin Course Book 1 will probably cover it - depends if the new school have done 1h weekly or 2hrs weekly I guess. DD has been doing 1 hr per week at her school and I think they are towards the end of Book 1 by now.

Can you not ask the new school for advice?

Passerillage · 29/05/2023 10:45

They'll be using the Cambridge Latin Course so find out what chapter they expect to get to by the end of this year and get the book and work your way through it together - it's very manageable, and you'll learn Latin too! Or get a tutor on preply for 2 (separate) hours a week through the summer to help her if you're working etc.

The new school should inform you of which book(s) they’re using. Do ask them!

In this exact situation our new prep school sent a digital copy of the whole textbook, so child could work through it over the preceding Summer. (With the family Latin specialist.Halo) It was absolutely no problem - particularly because the Latin teacher spent an immense of time during child’s first term revisiting the previous year’s work with the whole class.
