DS going into S3 in Scotland (England Year 9 I think) after the summer and has the chance of participating in either Duke of Edinburgh or Combined Cadet Force. He is leaning towards CCF.
Which is the better choice? Hit me with your pros and cons for each.

One year, DofE here did a walk from the school to some fields 5 miles away and the volunteering was safe things like helping out at Brownies or a primary school. Obviously only Bronze, but not exactly thrilling for some participants.

CCF did flying/gliding/weekends on Naval vessels/parades/large events.

DofE possibly encourages more independence (in theory) because they have to undertake things like volunteering and skills. The expeditions are generally good fun. The downside is that this isn't necessarily always the case at Bronze level in reality and not that many will progress beyond bronze.
The CCF has more things that are organised for them, but offers more opportunities for leadership as they get older. It may offer things like gliding, shooting, depending on the section. In CCF they're a group all year, as opposed to DofE which is only particularly a group effort around expedition time.

Do the cadets not do DofE ?
I know you can do DofE through cadets near me.

I guess some of it will depend on his personality. With cadet forces, he will be expected to learn to march and learn to follow orders. Some folk are more suited to that than others.

Most CCF detachments also do DofE
