Sorry quick GCSE question

Sorry if this seems a daft question. If a question asks for 2 examples but a student provides 3 but only 2 of them are correct will they still give the marks for the 2 correct and disregard the incorrect one?

Yes, usually.

If the wrong answer doesn't contradict the right ones then usually yes, unless it's a multiple choice and they have ticked 3 instead of 2 then they would just get 1.

We clarified this with the exam board last year. For English, if you’re asked to ‘identify two reasons’ and you give three, then yes, you’d be credited with two.

Not in maths, you'd lose a mark for the incorrect one.

PVA123 · 18/05/2023 23:02

In science they'd take your first two answers written down and ignore the 3rd

caringcarer · 19/05/2023 00:15

It depends on the subject.

prairiegirl81 · 19/05/2023 00:22

In my subject, they would mark the first two answers given.

If these first two are correct, the response would get two marks.

If the first is correct, and the third one is also correct, but the second response is incorrect, it would only be awarded one mark. We mark up to the number of responses the candidate has been asked to give.

The exception here would be if one of the first two responses has been clearly crossed out, and replaced with a third, but leaving only two answers in total, this would be given two marks if both remaining responses were correct.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 19/05/2023 07:27

In science we use the "list principle" so they would mark your first two answers only. There's nothing to be gained from writing a third.

If it's just a two mark question which doesn't specify a number of responses, then you can write three things and get credit. It's not negatively marked.

TrappedPotato · 19/05/2023 09:39

In my subject only the first two answers would be marked so it would depend where the incorrect answer was placed in the order of answers.
