Can someone help me with English Lang please?

I'm trying hard to help my son. I've looked at his Mock Language paper. I'm looking at an 8 point question and he's got 1 mark out of 8.
The feedback is this:

Focus on behaviour
Write Less just PEA and compare

I said to my son do you understand her feedback and he said no he doesn't get it.
He doesn't feel he can talk to his teacher either.
How can I help my son with not long to go?
I've looked up PEA and can only see something about PEE? Is that the same?

I'd really appreciate some advice please 🙏

Aqa language paper 2 the 8 marker could be comparing question? The question is summarise either the differences or similarities between two texts about a give topic?
If so do SQI - make a summary statement, support with a quotation and make an inference for text A and theb connective and do thr same for text b.
Eg. The writer in Text a shows how the elephants were treated badly and described them as 'in a miserable condition' this suggests that the owners did not care for their welfare and were only interested in making profit (whatever you can infer from text as a whole). Whereas/similarly the write in text a shows how the elephants were..... "........" which suggests....
So long as he can make an inference then this structure shoild get him 6 marks

Does anyone know where I can find the mark scheme for that question?
I don't have the full paper so don't know what year it was etc

@Poppy802 mine didn't do AQA English lang, I just googled AQA past paper elephants mark scheme. It seems easy for us as a lot of us have been through this with our own children and are now trying to help everyone else too.

This is the very best of MN @Poppy802 we are genuinely trying to help. As a parent I feel that the mark schemes really spell it out which then means you can help your children with it too. I had to do the same thing with Ds2.

That's so kind. My sons capable enough but has had a hard time and has been unable to focus properly but feel like we still have time to turn things around!

@clary I normally do about 300 in November and upwards of 500 in the summer. There are months of the year when I dream about those things 🤣

Yep. Last summer I did way more than 500. That's a lot of reading about campsites, and whether holidays have to be far away and expensive.

Having taught A levels, the number of students who do not understanding what a point is, how to come up with one, what analysis is, what evidence is, or how to structure a paragraph by the end of the course is pretty amazing. No, it’s not down to poor teaching, it’s similar across essay-based courses. I don’t know what it’s about, best guess is lack of reading.

Some good advice on here OP. Encourage reading, it’s a ‘natural’ way to get to grips with this (according to me).

I mark this paper. If it is Q2 it is the question "use evidence from both sources to write a summary of ..."

The 8 mark question is a summary and not a language analysis. PEA doesn't tend to work and when marking I can see how students have been trained incorrectly.

@MrsHamlet firstly, thank you for your marking, it isn't well paid and I respect you for trawling through all those papers. Iit was thanks to an incredible English teacher and her specifics for Ds2 on how to improve and me doing some serious leg work at home we got him from scraping a 5 in his November mock to an 8 at GCSE. Not bad for a boy who absolutely hated English lang and lit but applied himself, did loads of extra work because he wasn't going to let it beat him.

As a side note I love Hamlet and saw Sir Ken Branagh perform at the RSC. Breathtaking. My degree is English lit and everyone in this house is a maths head. Noooooo. Hence why I come on these threads, no one talks about English lit in this house. Luckily both DCs read.

What's in place to make sure they're being marked correctly? Not saying you but how do we know there's not someone marking them whilst drinking a bottle of wine at the same time! 🙈🙈
