Manchester / Trafford wait lists

Does anyone know if there's been much / any movement on wait lists in South Manchester area? Quite a lot didn't get first choice and I know a number will go private. Trying to give a friend some hope as they given a school they are desperate not to go to.

That area is under quite a lot of pressure for places. Obviously if those who have chosen to send their children to independent schools turn down their state offer it helps free up places for those on waiting lists. If people hang on to more than one place until just before term starts that causes unnecessary stress for other families.

Yes I have families that I am helping who are wondering if there has or will be much movement.

Very little if any movement. The council was pretty delayed in making its next round of offers due to trying to increase capacity in Manchester schools to ensure it could allocate places to all the late applicants/new arrivals who had no offer. Kingsway reduced its PAN in recent years along with some of the Trafford schools so the kids that used to go out of Manchester are staying in the city boundaries now. Even with Newall Green reopened and the full size year group at Belle Vue in the East of the city the LA is really struggling for places. The school age population is up by something like 10, 000 compared to 5 years ago and a lot of it is in Year so can't be planned for

Thx @HobnobsChoice hence why I've not heard of much, I'd forgotten Belle Vue opened and Newall Green doesn't appear on admissions data but I know people very upset about getting it.

Actually Newall is now on there and offered 140 places, whilst all others that side of town are oversubscribed.
That's a lot

It was even harder last year without Newall Green and with the reduction in places in Trafford as kids were being offered CHS South at best or as far away as Cedar Mount or Manchester Academy.

Do people want Enterprise Academy/Didsbury/Parrs Wood or are they wanting Trafford schools?

Appeals are starting now so that might change some things. Have the people you know put in appeals?

Friends DC got offered Stretford, Sale and Urmston from waiting list just after Easter break having been offered a Manchester school…they’ve accepted Stretford…not sure if they were just lucky but seems to be a small amount of movement…?

Not heard of anyone else but we’re Manchester with a place at a Trafford Grammar so a bit out of the loop…

tadpolecity · 02/05/2023 21:43

@loopyloopster some of those will be people accepting private places for sure as I know 2-3

@HobnobsChoice
People seem to want Didsbury High, Chorlton High, Parrswood, CHSouth, or Barlow/MEA.
Trinity - different as strict faith criteria
Less popular Manchester Academy / Loretto / Newall / TEMA / St Peter's
A lot who got Newall are not happy as they didn't have it as a preference and previous Newall Green High had awful reputation.

Looks like Manchester wait lists are finally now moving as hearing of DC finally who are switching which schools they are going too. Good news as it's also before transition stuff starts. I hadn't realised that kingsway had reduced PAN so although that comes under Stockport it's had an impact. Manchester primary admissions are the other extreme with spaces everywhere
