Another uniform question

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 10:47

First child off to secondary in sept. Uniform policy on website requires trousers to be black. Also banned are the usual leggings, joggers etc and jeans.

My question is about chinos which are also banned but my child doesn't like the scratchy nature of polyester school trousers. I found some in H&M

Sorry the thing posted before I finished

The H&M ones are marketed as tailored trousers.

My question is - when is a chino not a chino, and how much does it matter anyway?

I want my child to be comfortable but also not be constantly bollocked for uniform rule flouting.

Link would be helpful

You need to ask your school.
Some schools will be extremely hot on any variation from the norm.
Others will be fine with anything that is black and trouserlike.

Lovelyveg82 · 14/03/2023 10:52

Why not just get cotton trousers?

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 10:52

If it helps, John Lewis and M&S both usually do cotton school trousers. They aren't often in stock now but when back to school season rolls round you might find you have more choice.

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 10:53

@Lovelyveg82 I have ordered the H&M cotton trousers but was just wondering whether the fact that chinos are also banned would include these.

@FluffySatsuma thanks that's helpful. When I've searched I've not found anything at the mo.

Uniform so expensive I'm trying to work out what we can get ahead of time to spread the cost and be acceptable to the child who only wears leggings under skirts right now as everything else is itchy or falls down.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I think the button on those might be an issue. Formal trousers usually have that hidden button design. The fact that it's clearly got a button, and not black, might tip them into the banned category. I know it shouldn't matter. But that would be my concern.

But just order school trousers that you know fit with the reqs that are cotton!

FluffySatsuma · 14/03/2023 10:56

@seathewayahead I know the cost is a nightmare. But the savings deals usually appear later in the year too. So then you get the 20% off deals. Can you start saving now and spread the cost that way rather than buying up front and maybe end up spending more?

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 10:56

@FluffySatsuma thanks. That is interesting.

I would think I was overthinking it but maybe not!

Someone whose kid already goes there told me to be wary of exposed zips as they are banned!

It’s a “relaxed fit”

perhaps not

WandaWonder · 14/03/2023 10:58

It would be cheaper to check with the school before buying them and risking it

There is stuff my child doesn't like wearing but uniform is there so has to get on with so for me it is simpler to get what is asked rather than trying to find ways around it but just ask the school

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 10:59

@Lovelyveg82 I guess I would if I could find some. M&S, John Lewis and supermarkets school trousers are all poly blends at the mo.

Child hates stiff / scratchy fabrics. At primary she wears leggings under soft jersey skirts which comply fine with the primary guidance.

The guidance also says just because it's sold as school uniform doesn't mean it complies. But then just lists "jeans leggings chinos and joggers" as the banned items with no guidance beyond as to what makes something a chino or whatever.

It's like they want people to get caught out!

Skirt and cotton tights?

PeekAtYou · 14/03/2023 11:01

You can buy school trousers made from cotton. My son would get a rash from normal school trousers. (Don't know if it's the polyester or Teflon)

Our secondary was much stricter than primary and I would imagine teachers asking if she was wearing jeans because of the silver button

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 11:02

@FluffySatsuma yes good idea on saving. I just like to try and spread the organisation too.

So many things to get. I haven't even got to what you carry a PE kit in once you've bought the 15 items of required kit! Grin

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 11:02

@PeekAtYou thanks! Maybe I just change the button!

I do sympathise, school uniform is a nightmare. My DD has sensory issues and I was very worried about how she'd manage with the much stricter secondary uniform. They have specified trousers from the uniform shop so at least you aren't left trying to figure out if something meets the criteria or not. She held out for a while and wore the skirt but then decided the trousers were more bearable than having to wear tights or having cold legs. She still gets changed the minute she gets home though.

NewNovember · 14/03/2023 11:03

Does your dd have a disability like ASD that causes her sensory issues? If so you can ask the school to make a reasonable adjustment to the uniform.

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 11:04

@Lovelyveg82 thanks! Just remembered I did see those but they're sold out in all secondary sizes. I'll see whether they come back into stock

Also are skirts allowed because you mention leggings under skirts , that should be allowed as pants under skirts are allowed for Muslim girls.

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 11:07

@NewNovember well, I wonder if I have some form of adhd / asd traits as I also have sensory issues (along with other issues) but totally undiagnosed.

She has nothing diagnosed (but is quite similar to me) but simply just won't wear anything that's not soft. Very occasionally she is persuaded into jeans or cord trousers.

Tights I've tried cotton, soft merino, all sorts and she wears them once and then just says they're not comfortable.

For primary they're happy just as long as it's navy or black or grey. So she wears those jersey flippy skirts with built in shorts over the leggings.
