Another uniform question

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 10:47

First child off to secondary in sept. Uniform policy on website requires trousers to be black. Also banned are the usual leggings, joggers etc and jeans.

My question is about chinos which are also banned but my child doesn't like the scratchy nature of polyester school trousers. I found some in H&M

@FluffySatsuma thanks x

@NewNovember skirts are allowed. So perhaps she could just do a skirt with leggings under. Leggings are banned as trousers but maybe ok under skirts.

I guess at some point I'll just have to email the school.

Knee-length cycling shorts under skirt?

seathewayahead · 14/03/2023 10:59

@Lovelyveg82 I guess I would if I could find some. M&S, John Lewis and supermarkets school trousers are all poly blends at the mo.

Child hates stiff / scratchy fabrics. At primary she wears leggings under soft jersey skirts which comply fine with the primary guidance.

The guidance also says just because it's sold as school uniform doesn't mean it complies. But then just lists "jeans leggings chinos and joggers" as the banned items with no guidance beyond as to what makes something a chino or whatever.

It's like they want people to get caught out!

Check out where the school suggests you buy the uniform from. The shop should be able to advise which items work for that particular school. Or the school possibly gives more details of which brands or makes of trousers are acceptable. You don’t want your child getting into trouble for not being in correct uniform, the secondary school will check out what the students are wearing.

JussathoB · 14/03/2023 23:10

More information should come through from the school - it’s only March!

londonmummy1966 · 14/03/2023 23:22

My DDs school uniform said they had to wear black tights so I put them in long black leggings over black ankle socks - only time school objected I pointed out that if they wore tights they would wear them with multiple rips and ladders which would look a lot worse. Might be worth asking if she could wear somthing similar under a skirt.

Other option might be soft cycling shorts under a skirt with over knee socks for warmth. Sock shop sell them in a bamboo fibre which is very soft.

A lot of secondary schools do not allow over the knee socks.
Please pay careful attention to the specifications for the school uniform and visit the recommended shops etc where the school suggests you buy it from.
it’s not about you coming up with ideas for the child to wear according to what you’ve seen or what your child’s preferences are. The uniform will be part of the school rules and it would be a great pity for your child or you to have hassle from school over it.

seathewayahead · 15/03/2023 12:10

@JussathoB skirts and shorts seem to be available from a shop with a logo so it's clear what is acceptable but trousers it just says black trousers, full length and then no jeans chinos leggings or joggers.

Socks it just says black, no length specified.

It's like it's just specific enough for there to be rules to be broken but not specific enough to be helpful!

We will have to agree to disagree on uniform. I don't want my child to be bollocked for breaking rules but I will work out what suits them and me and other things like the weather and so on when making decisions. If they want the children to wear standard issue trousers they should should be sold like the skirts. As they aren't, we will find a happy medium of works for us within their guidance.

I expect I will have to email them for their definition of chino and then go from there.

I do like the suggestions of cotton tights under the skirt but she most likely won't wear them.

I know it’s tricky. Hopefully the school will give more specific information as part of their arrangements for welcoming new students and parents? If you go to a new parents evening perhaps you could ask then, or contact the Head of year 7 /Lead tutor for the new year 7

haggisaggis · 15/03/2023 12:16

My dd used to wear jersey trousers from M&S. Much sofet than the usual school trousers

At secondary school?

haggisaggis · 15/03/2023 12:19

Into S1 certainly. Then she wore skirts after that.

ChestnutGrove · 15/03/2023 12:19

When I wasn't sure about kicker boots I emailed the school. They thanked me for checking (as they prefer this than having a battle with parents over an already bought item)

JussathoB · 15/03/2023 12:22

Yeah shoes for school can be tricky as well

Oh come on Op

she “most likely won’t wear them”

she likes 100% cotton against her skin. You have found a solution. 100% cotton tights plus skirt, and definitely will meet uniform requirements.

I am all for trying to accommodate my children’s clothing preferences but there has to be a little give and take

seathewayahead · 15/03/2023 13:06

@Lovelyveg82 what I said is that she likes soft comfortable clothes and also that she usually refuses to wear tights.

Cotton was my answer to scratchy polyester based trousers which is what we've done for primary (leggings, jersey skirts and chino type shorts).

I'm perfectly happy to accommodate my child's clothing preferences, what I'm trying to do is to work out how to do that within the confines of the uniform at a new school.

My OP was about whether a specific pair of trousers could be ruled to be chinos.

Yes I am sure I am overthinking but I also can't bear to uncomfortable in clothes, like to spread the cost of my purchases and have to plan things in great detail in advance to get the stressing out of the way so when the time comes I feel organised and in control.

The JL pure cotton I am sure will become available at some point in the next six months so sign up to be notified and all good

get some 100% cotton tights and the skirt as back up though (and a spare!)

Easy for you to say. Tights can be really hard for anyone with sensory sensitivities, my own child won’t wear them. They might be soft but there is so much potential for sensory difficulties with seams, sagging crotches, weird knees, uncomfortable toes, etc.

seathewayahead · 15/03/2023 13:16

@Lovelyveg82 yes good idea to sign up. I'll do that

@FluffySatsuma yes saggy crotches and toe seams drive me mad with tights. I have one pair (falke merino that are long legged high waist) that I can tolerate but they cost £50 so not really something I can do for school uniform. She would wear merino ones when she was younger but latterly has just refused and dresses herself in long socks or leggings. I've bought her cotton tights in the last year and she's worn them once and refused to wear them again.

Thanks for all your input

Asda do jersey trousers in black.

DD (Y9) is really fussy about what things feel like and she will wear those no problem at all.

OhCrumbsWhereNow · 15/03/2023 15:37

direct.asda.com/george/school/trousers/girls-black-jersey-school-trousers-2-pack/GEM936855,default,pd.html?cgid=D10M2G1C21

These ones seem to pass muster with school - and wash and wear well.

CornedBeef451 · 15/03/2023 15:40

I would second the idea to save up rather than buying now. DS is in year 7 and has grown at least 4 inches since the end of year 6 and he is not unusual. You have no idea how big he'll be by September!
